Important Information:
  • Based on user experience, FreedomPop calculates data usage every 15 mins. This data is also rounded up to nearest MB(Link to rounded up confirmation). Even though it only use few kilobytes of data like checking email does every 10 minutes, freedompop data metering rounts up to one full megabyte This translates to a minimum of 4MB per hour for a device that simply checks email or 2880MB per 30 days because freedompop's rounding methodology. Home Burst Hub has been confirmed to round up only in reporting, not actual usage, so a few KB will show up as 0 or 1 MB over a while, only when it accumulates to the next MB.
Comment: I've received word from FreedomPop that they may have had a mix-up between owners of the MAC addresses in their database. Therefore, you may have been shown / charged the data usage for another customer. A fix is supposedly under way. -unlockedshaders
  • Only work on Clear 4G WiMAX network. No 3G network.
  • Terms [freedompop.com] [freedompop.com [freedompop.com]] Inactive account fee: If you choose the free Broadband Service and use less than 5mb in any given month, we wi€™ll charge you a $.99 Active Status fee to keep your account active.
  • they will be switching from 4G WiMAX to LTE in As early as June 2013. The equipment they have now won't work with LTE but current equipment may be supported through up to 2015.. (no detail what they will do. Freedompop CSR said the switch could involve paying more money to exchange for a newer device. The coverage area during this transition may change so your current WiMax device my actually be superior to an LTE device due to coverage.
  • Note: FreedomPop has changed their Terms and Conditions few times already. Please read the latest terms for Equipment and others information
SDers experience:Leased Equipment -- No Longer Offered (related to deposit refund).

https://www.freedompop.com/servic..._terms.htm (looks like they change this few times already. This is only correct as of 10/11/2012. May have changed afterward.)
  • refund the deposit (less any amounts that you owe to us) to your registered payment method
  • FreedomPop is still actively providing the same Equipment to users of the Broadband Service
  • you (or we) terminate your subscription to the Broadband Service within 1 year of the start date of your subscription (won't get refund after ONE year)
  • deduct from your deposit refund all amounts owed and unpaid for any Services and for any Equipment you return that is damaged due to neglect, misuse, liquid damage or non-standard wear and tear. (sounds like only allow refund if it is "NEW" or "LIKE NEW" condition)
  • there is RESTOCKING FEE for opened item. Also customer pay for shipping.
There is NOT a RESTOCKING FEE, RECEIVED A FULL REFUND OF $89 for the device 11-4-12

EDIT 12-1-12 THERE IS A RESTOCKING FEE - Charged a restocking fee of $8.25. Device and packaging were spotless.
From Patrick, Customer Service:
"Your device was received in good condition and the majority of your deposit was refunded. We were charged a small fee by our logistics partner to replace packaging and re-polish the device. This fee was deducted from the deposit at cost per our T&Cs and should be nominal. We're totally committed to making internet as free as possible, including the device, but when we're are charged a real fee, we need to deduct that from deposit or we'd be forced to make users buy the device outright which we're trying to avoid. "

EDIT 1-7-2013 RMA categorized as B-stock (visible damage). Refunded $67 of the the $89 deposit. Device and packaging were spotless as well.
After inquiries via email asking for explanation, customer service stalled for about 3 weeks, then refused to provide any further explanation or proof, stating:

"I have received confirmation from our logistics provider that the condition of your device was correct and your refund amount reflects that. This is the response they sent to me "Yes, this was properly graded as B-stock. The device was not in perfect physical condition."

This conflicts with the allowance in the Service Plan terms for "reasonable wear and tear":

FREEDOM FRIENDS BONUS DATA
You get an additional 50MB per month for each "Freedom Friend" you connect with through your account. Also, you can share extra data with them that you won't need that month, etc. ...very cool.

THIS IS NOT A REFERRAL as both of you are already subscribed to the service. You can add up to 10 friends for extra 500MB per month, every month. Or keep more connected friends to give or receive MB when you need it before the next cycle.

To see a list of emails of people who agree to be added, go to THIS THREAD: http://slickdeals.net/f/5276432-FreedomPop-Friends?v=1

What is says on the Find Friends page:

Earn Free Data by Connecting with Friends!

Find your friends on FreedomPop and earn free data. The more friends you connect to, the more free data you earn every month.

From the FAQ

In addition to the guaranteed 500 MB/month free you'll receive by being a user, you can also earn up to 1GB/month free by connecting with your friends on FreedomPop and earn unlimited data free by participating in partner offers and promotions.

With Freedom Friends - you'll earn 10MB for every friend you're connected with on FreedomPop (up to an additional 500MB/month).

With partner offers and promotions - you can earn unlimited data each month by completing special offers. Special offer earned data must be used in the month that it is earned otherwise it will expire.

-------------------------------

Visit the Devices page to initiate a return.

Devices subjected to neglect misuse, liquid damage or non standard wear and tear are not eligible for our return program.

Please post here if you find any proof to support above opinions.

-------------------------------

Inactive Account Fee

https://www.freedompop.com/servic..._terms.htm
If you choose the free Broadband Service and use less than 5mb in any given month, we’ll charge you a $.99 Active Status fee to keep your account active.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

TRACKING DATA USAGE

If you are using Android and want to keep track of your data, you can use the free app FreedomChomp - https://play.google.com/store/app...eedomchomp

To track useage on a PC, you can use the Performance Monitor in the Task Manager.
1. Start Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Delete)
2. Select the Network tab
3. Select View Menu->Select Columns
4. Check Bytes (total of Bytes Sent and Received)
Leave the Task Manager on and note the Total Bytes for the day or session.
Add that to the total from your FreedonPop account home page.

On an Android device, download this app: Network Speed (there are probably others, as well: CISCO Data app)
Open the app and select menu, then select Totals. There is a daily and a monthly total for each network type.
See eth0 for wifi totals.

A single speedtest on (www.speedtest.net [speedtest.net]) took over 10MB, so there is your minimum.

Why are there so many complaints? Why is everyone returning devices?

--------------------------

Using the 4G USB modem stick with Nexus 7 (may also work with other android devices), just do the following steps.
1. Turn off wifi
2. Plug the stick in the USB port (need the micro USB OTG for Nexus 7)
3. Open a web browser.
4. Go to http://192.168.14.1 and under the Advanced setting, select NAT Mode. Then, apply.

That's it. No rooting or additional app required.

I'm currently at 91% of my plan's usage capacity with two days remaining in the billing period. I'm trying to connect to the web but my Photon 4G device continuously redirects me to FreedomPop's site for "updates to my account". Unfortunately, nothing shows up (i.e. alerts, notifications, messages) when I click the provided link. Has anyone else had this issue? The credit card I had attached to my account recently expired. I assumed that was the issue so I updated the billing information to reflect my new credit card but I'm still redirected to FreedomPop's site to review "updates to my account".

edit// My issue was already addressed in the FAQ section, haha (whoops).

Q: I still have 100MB of data left for the month, why is my account suspended?

A: When you disabled Automatic Top Up, our system automatically sets up a lock onto your account once you reach a 100MB threshold on your account as a way to protect our users from overage charges. You have hit that limit and that is why you cannot access the internet. As you know there is a 3 hour delay in usage reporting and that is why our systems do this.
I've only used about 10-20mb last month and none this month, and I keep getting this stupid 'updates to my account' message that I can't dismiss. So I keep getting redirected to the FreedomPOP website and there's no information, dialogue, or prompt resolve this issue or see these 'updates'. Also doesn't help that 'support' just links to a FAQ and the 'contact us' link doesn't have dropboxes for actual tech or billing support.

Such a headache -- I don't even understand why they would ask people to pay beyond the free allotment is beyond me when they don't even have their stuff together. This feels more like alpha than beta.

I got the mystery $0.99 fee charged to my account, well an attempt at least as my card had expired.

Too many hidden / small-print charges to be worth the hassle. I put an RMA request in. The level of frustration evident in my social media posts of the experience will depend on return and refund hassles. Send me a friggin email to tell me to use a meg rather than charge me, what a pain. Or don't put a time limit on security deposit refunds if you are going to charge an inactivity fee. One or the other, but charging without warning is customer-hostile.

Companies/offers like this are why using virtual credit card numbers can be beneficial.

I didn't get in on the Freedompop revolution. But it interests me and I've kinda been following this thread.

So generally speaking, what are your thoughts on Freedompop for Tablets:

I've been trying to research this as well. I thought maybe it could be flashed but I wasn't able to find any firmware for Freedompop. Also, I tried inputting my MAC address into Freedompop's website where it says to click if you already have your device, but it says device not found. So perhaps not.

Add me to the list of skeptics on how reliably they are measuring usage.

I've had the hotspot for several months now, and it's been fine as an occasional use for connecting a iPad or Nexus while out at the mall (I have unlimited data plan on my phone). Since I really just do some mobile web browsing, I found it hard to top even 10 MB per session in my occasional session, and even had to use it unncessarily last month to get above the minimum data usage.

But today I connected and played four Youtube videos on an iPad for my toddler over a 20 minute period. When I got home, Freedompop said I downloaded 980 MB from 1-1:15 pm, and another 253 MB from 1:15-1:30 pm. That's basically a sustained 10 Mbps download continously for the entire 20 minutes - I don't think I've even seen the hotspot deliver me 10 Mbps speeds!

Moreover to simulate, at home I then connected the iPad to my home wi-fi, connected to 20 Mbps Comcast internet. Since the Youtube app shows the play history, I replayed the same four videos. First, the app maxed out download speed from Youtube's servers at about 4.5 Mbps. Second, the app would obviously stop downloading once the entire video was cached, and it turns out the entire size of these four videos is about 300 MB. These videos had a duration of about 16 minutes, and there were no other videos downloaded and played.

I'm sure there was some slight background data going on (the two following 15 minutes periods showed 60 MB each). But what I think is that maybe I was at a location that had 10 Mbps connection speed, but they were "metering" me at that max bandwidth even though the actual downloaded data was far, far less than the maximum. I sent a message via their website and will see how they respond. It's less than $10 of data charges, which I'll still keep the device for its backup purposes in any case, but it would be so petty of them to make their money this way....

Has anyone been able to use the 4G USB modem stick with Galaxy Note 2? I tried applying the Wiki instructions for using the device with Nexus 7, but even with a working micro USB OTG adapter, was unable to browse to the router's IP address on my Samsung mobile phone.

ooh just noticed that the beta changed the amount of data given per friend from 10Mb to 50Mb per month. that's a pretty big change.

I have not seen that change yet in my account, it still looks like 10mb*50 friends.

I've recently canceled my AT&T service for my Samsung Skyrocket since I mostly work at home with GV and Obi, and can't see continuing to pay over $600 a year for the odd on-the-road phone call and checking Gmail. I've got GrooveIP installed as well, so no problem using GV via wi-fi or cellular.

I thought the FreedomPop free plan would work, and in theory didn't mind paying almost a hundred bucks with shipping for what would hopefully be a year or more of free occasional use service.

However, as Clear has spotty coverage here, and as I hope to buy a Nexus 10 or iPad in the coming months, I wanted to know more about their new table hardware, so I called. That call convinced me I might be better off spending that money over the course of a year by getting the lowest cost SIM plan I can find, like H2O or something else. And btw, if anyone here knows of a great SIM deal, please let me know.

First, it will be at least two months to their Sprint "roll out" (which will NOT be full coverage for months after that). And it will be at least that long until they offer the new router for tablets. So waiting until then seems sensible, since they will NOT be offering a trade-in for the Photon.

But it was asking about returns and warranty that really made this a 'stay away' proposition for me. First, they no longer view your giving them money for the Photon a 'lease' or 'deposit' - that made them too liable to credit card charge backs and having to refund the full price of the unit. No, this is now a buy, pure and simple. Strike One.

You have 30 days to return your product, and the sales person I spoke to would not admit to a restock fee. They have something more insidious: a 'use deduction' that they, and only they determine in terms of wear, and the amount they're willing to refund you. It could be 10% less, it could be 30% - or more - after less than a single month's use. It is at their sole discretion and cannot be questioned or denied. Strike Two.

Their product warranty is 90 days. Period. Your unit can't even turn on Day 91 - tough. You're SOOL. Just send 'em another $100, thanks. No thanks. What company charges that much for a product and only warranty's three months of use? A company whose business model is based on getting folks to buy double-the-otherwise-retail price for shoddy equipment. Thus, they assured me, there's no way to use Clear's own Photon that sells for less than fifty bucks. Strike Three and they're out.

Yep, I can see that on the surface this seems like a good deal compared to the insanely priced offerings from the Majors (which is what FreedomPop is no doubt counting on), but if they show any kind of profit at all, the Majors or some other start-up will imitate them in some fashion. If not today, then in the coming months. The market just works that way, and has for everything tech. So Patience, Grasshopper. Patience. Big Grin

They told you that top bit over the phone? I've never heard that before. You mean just going forward for new sign-ups or retroactive to early adoptors? If the latter then they're just begging for a lawsuit or two over the bait-and-switch.

Agree on your last point, but sometimes people don't want to wait. I also live in a major coverage area and find the signal quite spotty and frustrating at times.

They did tell me that over the phone. I didn't ask about retroactive, sorry. However, I imagine that if your paperwork said 'deposit' there's no way they can change that and probably wouldn't try. Just to test I put a Photon in the cart, and it's clear it's a sale, not lease or deposit.

I understand not wanting to wait, too - but because of my phone situation, I'm lucky to have other choices, like a SIM card instead of MiFi.
