Before it was called World Market it only went by Cost Plus... The very first store was in San Francisco and it's still there. I believe at one of my trainings many years ago they said it was named cost plus because you were paying cost plus 10%. It included pictures from the original opening many decades ago... all they used to sell was rattan product and baskets, etc. Has changed a lot since then. Also I believe Bed Bath and Beyond has gobbled them up as of recent. Good store to work for but when i left in 2008 they were hurting for money.

LOL. Your comment makes me think you're talking about ikea on the longevity of this stuff which I don't think is accurate. I was a furniture department head once upon time for this company and had an entire binder detailing every piece of furniture in that store and nearly all of it was made from Rubberwood (contrary to the name it was a plantation hardwood). Yes their furniture has veneer in places where you would expect it (mainly chair backs or doors on buffets) and yes they do sell products that are not hardwood (hot buys, etc) but their core furniture line was substantially all hardwood. Some of the best and reasonably priced furniture in the business. It sold itself - I barely did any work. In fact many of my friends and family still own their furniture when i got them deals on it. Additionally, I still own numerous pieces of their furniture and it's in amazing shape. I left that company after 5 years when I graduated from college and I have zero connnection to them now. So as a disclaimer I left in 2008 so its possible things have changed but I go in there from tiem to time and still see the same furniture lines. Also, they have a free service to build any furniture they sell - use it if you can't put together a shelf and desk on your own.

Lame - yeah I don't recognize the name of that set must be a newer line. Maybe thats how they started to become a profitable company. When i was there they were hurting for money and stock wasn't doing so well.

I bought a dining room table from World Market in 2008. For what I paid during the F&F sale (I think about $400 for the table and four chairs), it was a bargain. It's rubberwood. I am HARD on furniture, mostly because I am lazy about using coasters, cleaning, etc. It's served as my work desk for the past four years. I love it. My entertainment center is also from WM. It's rubberwood as well. It's too bad they switched the veneer.
