I just discovered two unauthorized charges on my MasterCard this morning. Both were for $250 e-gift cards made late last night made on JC Penneys website. I hadn't used the JCP site in a couple of years.
Thing was that the only stored card was an old, invalid one. The order was placed with a current one that had not been previously used on that site. I did use it to buy something on Meritline several months ago. Maybe another site was hacked and they are testing for the same credentials on other sites. I've heard similar stories on Amazon, Walmart and now JCP. If the progression is similar, KMart may be the next target.
I started a thread in the Site Questions, Issue or Suggestions forum wondering if sd should have a potential fraud forum. I just hate it when irony bites me on my ass.
I made an order through their website on March 8th and tonight I got another e-mail thanking me for my order which I thought was weird. It turns out someone used my check card number to purchase a gift card from their site using my Walmart.com account.
Luckily I was able to log into my account and cancel it right after I got the e-mail. If I hadn't been online at the time, the order would have gone through! The e-mail it was supposed to be sent to was a Gmail e-mail which used a Vietnamese name email@example.com .
