Honestly, Ive been running this router with DD-WRT for about 1+ year now and I have been disappointed for the most part. I do live in a condo so their are quite a bit of routers around but I have tried all sorts of different settings and DD-WRT builds with generally the same problems. Just low signal/speeds from rooms not far at all from the my router.
Been meaning to dust off my old D-Link DIR-655 that I know for a fact worked better. Either that or maybe try Tomato on the N16.... This is just my experience. Last edited by iamtwan; 10-01-2012 at 04:21 PM.. |

I have had this router for years. Maybe couple times a year power cycle it. Have DD-WRT on it, and love it. My kids watch Netflix through the wireless via Wii, and I hear very few complaints about freezeups and dropouts. It rarely happens. Trust me, the fam is not bashful about complaining. Also run VoIP through it, have the VoIP box in the DMZ.
Highly recommend this router with DD-WRT. How did I live before SlickDeals? NOT AS WELL.

Great deal! I've been running my first one since April of this year, (at which time I paid a bit more). Have had nothing negative to report about this router. Only positives. Running DD-WRT, it's fast and stable. I have it running as a print server, and use it daily for my home office. My Internet connection comes in from a remote wireless source, and redistributes it on a separate subnet.
The only question I've ever had about this model, with DD-WRT, is whether or not you can attach a 3G or 4G USB card to it. I read docs that said it was going to be possible, but not sure if anyone actually made this work. |

Edit: Just checked my Tomato and it has USB 3G Modem support. Don't know much more than what I saw on the menu. (See attached photo). This is with the Sibby "Big" version. I know that you can place the AIO (All In One - Shibby's best) version on the RT16 because it has enough flash to do so. Jumped on this. I have a Linksys (Cisco?) E3000 with tomato on it and it's been unstable. I modded it to add more cooling, but this didn't seem to help. So since I voided my warranty already, will have to go with something else.
I sure hope that ASUS did a better job with this router than Linksys. Thanks for the post! |

I bought mine when they first came out, so I've had it for quite a while. The stock firmware is garbage, so don't bother with that.
I'm running shibby's tomato mod, and I haven't rebooted the thing in months. The wireless signal on it isn't going to match today's $150+ routers, but for this price you can't pass this up! |

Could you explain why Tomato is better? It seems that Tomato (at least the one I am using) is not being updated anymore, while DDWRT is ongoing?? |
