When I tried these powerline adapters when they first came out, they specifically stated that they had to be plugged in DIRECTLY into the outlet. No surge protectors, UPSes or power strips to be used.

I am not sure how these new ones are. Someone who has one, perhaps they can chime in.

I am not an electrician, so I won't comment on that part of your question. But as far as the connection speed, in my house, I get over 4MB/s when copying files over my powerline adapters, as reported by Windows file copy dialog box. That's Megabytes per second, not megabits, so roughly 40mbps (megabits per second). That's using a set of 200mbps adapters. With 500mbps adapters, I was getting an about 15%-20% higher speed.

The reason I emphasized "in my house" is exactly that: YMMV based on your wiring and circuit layout.

Regarding Power Surges, has anyone seen this setup:

1. Point 1, DSL modem plugged into Zytel.
2. Point 2, Zytel adaptor plugged into wall
3. Point 2, Ethernet cable routed into Surge protector that accepts ethernet protection
4. Point 2, Ethernet cable from Surge protector into a router
5. Point 2, Ehternet cable from router to TV

I wonder if this would add any protection and be feasible speed wise. Would there be more of a danger going through 'ethernet' than the plug that's also in the TV?

They should work in parallel. I think I remember reading it in a review. But depending on what you do (like sttreaming video especially), they may end up competing for bandwidth.

I have used powerline products for almost 10 years now, in several homes. Work great, decent speed, and easy as pie to plug / play. They are designed to handle power surges / noise, and are very practical for a LAN.
