For those wondering, this charger is nearly identical to the BC-700 [amazon.com], with the exception that the 700 has a lower maximum charging rate (i.e. 700mA). The BC-1000 can go up to 1000mA for 2+ batteries, or 1800mA for 1-2 batteries at once. Since above 7000mA isn't recommended (unless you're in a hurry and need the batteries ASAP), the main benefits of this set for normal usage is the carrying pouch, the 4 C and 4 D adapters, and the included 4 AA and 4 AAA rechargeables. I can't for the life of me find my batteries that came with it, but iirc, they were not low self-discharge.

For comparison purposes, the lowest the BC-700 has been in the past couple of years is $24.73.

Kidding aside, it's basically a re-brand after the fire hazard fears. The later 9009s purportedly solved the problem with after multiple hardware and firmware revisions spanning a few years, but it was always hard to tell what you were getting before you checked the revision number on the back.

I use my bc700 to refresh older rechargable batteries that are not low self discharge batteries. I love the lsd ones though for electronics.

In regards to the 1000 vs. the 700, I had done some research awhile back about this and found that there were apparently some issues with the BC-700 overheating, or overheating the batteries. Supposedly this was an issue that got corrected in the 1000. Either way, both have got great reviews.

It is still working beautifully. As far as I can tell this BC1000 is not offering anything new, what am I missing?

The fire issue was isolated and people had it with chargers made long time ago. Later units with newer firmware have corrected this issue. When you plug it in, on right most LCD box, it shows firmware # your unit has. I remember if you have 33 or later, you're fine.

The BC-700 is usually on sale for $24.99 and it's better deal if you don't need adapters and those batteries. It charges at max 700mA vs. 1000mA but if you care about your batteries, you don't want to do 1A charge anyway.
