Current Cellphone Marketshare

So, not so much help needed but just wanted to put a couple of numbers together and see if anyone had anything to add.

I'll show my cards, I am a Windows Phone guy and have put money on the line in hopes it is a success. One major knock is that the market share is just NOTHING still...but just how many people are buying high end Androids?

25% are running 4.0 [engadget.com]



So, combine that with:
Android is 52% of marketshare [engadget.com]

And we have:
Android (2.X): 39%
iPhone: 33%
Android (4.X): 13%
RIM: 10%
WP: 4%

Hmmm, those are the numbers acording to ComScore, all the other companies are close but might differ a percent here and there.


Ohhh, you could also break this down by iOS too...

iOS 6 is 17% of market in 24 hrs [techcrunch.com]

Those were just 24 hr numbers, but with the Maps issue hitting the news I am sure many (like my wife) are holding off on updating...

The other problem with the iOS numbers though is "iPhone 3GS is getting iOS 6" but it is a different version, slightly. From all that I have read...the 3GS is running iOS 6 minus any feature you would ever see in a commercial.

So what's your point here?

Curtie, i'll bet you iOS & Android 4.XX will have more marketshare by the end of 2012 than Windows Phone 7 & 8 combined.

Two years is a long time. Version 2.2 was in May 2010. Version 2.3 was December 2010. Why do you think these numbers are because people aren't buying new phones? I'd guess it's more likely people not doing software updates.

If you are defining "high end Androids" by the 4.1 #'s I am not sure that's accurate.

I do not think WP will pass Android OR iOS by the end of the year, yet alone pass them COMBINED. I do think they will sell some phones though.

No, I define it by 4.X...the 4.1 number was less than a percent...that is not even close. Can't even distinguish it on the chart.

You think the 52% total penetration is from phones from 2010? You think that many more Droid X's sold than iPhone 4s? Not in my eyes...those huge numbers are because all the free Androids out these days or the $50 phones are all running 2.X...

Phones like the Samsung DoubleTime, Pantech Pocket or the Samsung Galaxy Exhilarate. [All offered for $1 to $30 on AT&T right now]

I also do not think it is because people WON'T do updates but rather because people CAN'T do updates.

It's VERY analogous to the PC market. Why is Windows # 1? Because it's included with the vast majority of off-the-shelf PC's, and Apple keeps iOS to itself. Over time this has meant that developers have chosen the Windows platforms over Mac. This is a bit different than cellphones though, however the Play Market is certainly making inroads.

The numbers sort of speak for themselves. If Android is 52% of smartphone market share and Gingerbread is something like 55% of Android share, that makes Gingerbread close to 27% of total smartphone share. How it got that way is anyone's guess, but the data certainly doesn't imply that the phones in use today started with Gingerbread on them. Still, Gingerbread was released in late 2010. It is now late 2012, and the share of Ice Cream Sandwich is growing. We're still six months to a year out from being able to tell whether Android as a whole has retained the popularity that made it a viable competitor to the iPhone. But with the glowing reviews the Samsung Galaxy S3 has received, I personally entirely expect that it will, especially when those reviews are contrasted against those of the iPhone 5. Presently, Windows phones aren't really even on the map. Microsoft needs to step up its advertising campaign.

I'd say typically people don't know how to do updates that aren't automatically pushed. Beyond that, so many phones have their own layer on top of Android (HTC Sense, for example) on top of Android that their users have to wait until an updated version of that is available. Odds are that for many pre-2012 phones, 4.x will never officially be available for them.
