What do you mean?
When WHS v1 was released, USB 2 was the only type of drive available...
I'm just creating a standard WHS v1 drive pool with lots of these Element 2TB drives...
What I mean is using the USB2 as part of the drive extender pool was and is not recommended. Yes USB2 and esata were available as external connections when WHS v1 was released and sub 3 was not. BUT the usb2 is for backups, the esata for adding to the drive pool. My point was the internal sata is for the drive pool. external USB will dramatically reduce speed of the entire pool since it will run at the slowest speed storage device included in the drive extender pool
On top of that most WHS is 24/7. Beyond running these externals 24/7 is really unwise. Your server has a nice power supply and cooling, these have neither.
Now harvesting the drives from the enclosures is a good idea since about 90% of the time these drives in usb2 enclosures are legacy non advanced format drives, which ironically are now more expensive barebones than AF drives bought barebones. AF and WHS v1 often dont play well together.
