My account show same problem as the OPs.
I have seen such problems before too and yes they mail me the difference... The only think I don't like about them mailing me the difference is that usually expires in 3 months (instead of 6).

Usually Staples Rewards staff are really good about issuing you the missing rewards so I'll definitely contact them to figure it out.
I got double pay from something else. I forgot if it was battery or ring binder. Somehow the offer was not in their system. I was among the first to chat with them for that issue. They issue me the rewards by mail immediately. Then more customer complained and they fixed the system a couple days later to valid all rewards retroactively.
Now I am not a Premier member and have to call them. Within a month or 2, I'll be a Premier member again.
LOL. It happens again. I called Staples Rewards ~10 days after the online ink purchase and in-store recycling in the following day since there was no double rewards for recycle. They sent me the rewards difference by mail last week. Then they fixed the issue in my rewards account that now it shows double rewards. At the end, I got triple rewards for the recycled cartridge.
