recently current customers were exempt and only new customers were required to pay the cable modem lease fee of $2.20, but now everyone will be paying $3.95 very soon!

the modems they lease out cost them about $40, but a lease for one year would add up to about $50!

i have decided to purchase the Motorola SB6141.

the SB5101 is a good modem for standard and slower.

check ebay for lower prices, like $80 for the Motorola SB6141. $10-15 for 3 year squaretrade warranty. first year overlaps with manufacture warranty and manufacture warranty prevails. $95 ($80 and $15) is $30 cheaper then the $125 amazon charges plus tax.

I bought a Surfboard about a year ago to get out of a $7/mo Comcast lease.

Well this just sucks. Looks like I have a reason to switch to the local ISP who runs on the TW network anyways now. I pay $65 a month for Turbo service 15x1 which I hardly ever see those speeds. Its just stupid expensive.

Time Warner Cable, the big broadband and cable provider, is planning to start charging customers a monthly fee of $3.95 for renting a cable modem from the company. It said in notifications mailed to customers this week that the new fee would go into effect over the next two months.

Internet customers who want to avoid the monthly fee can purchase a modem of their own and have Time Warner Cable activate it. The company has published a list of approved modems on its Web site. The compatible modems cost between $50 and $137 on Amazon.com.

I have been meaning to call TW to ask for a discount on service but have not had a chance. I wonder if its best to do this now or wait. If I don't switch ISPs I plan to buy my own DOCIS 3 Modem.

people made it sound like if you purchased your own you still got charged if you have your own you don't pay if you want to rent and pay for the modem you can but the original posting
made it sound like TWC was following this policy
Frontier Communications recently started charging everyone a $7 "modem support and warranty fee" whether you own your modem or not. Popular independent ISPs haven't been exempt; Sonic.net started charging their users a $6.95 modem rental fee back in July. Charter did something slightly different; they recently stopped supporting customer owned modems completely and rolled their modem fee into subscribers' monthly bills.

exactly, they can't force you to rent soemthing you can buy outright

ah, ICIC where you are going with it now. don't read into it so much. i fixed the topic to clarify.

I havent had to pay for my modem for awhile. I haven't received anything about it from TWC either...

currently paying $50 for 30/5 line. they said that $50 includes everything so maybe the modem rental is in that?

The news is that the charge would be going into effect for all customers now, including existing customers like you and me. The way to not pay the fee is to buy your own modem. My guess is that for your level of service you are on a promo rate that will eventually go up.

Personally I think I will wait until I get official news that service in my area is effected. It really makes me angry to see the price differences across the country for the same company.
