it really varies by promotion... i was on Time Warner before i switched to uverse and they charged me for the modem... when they came back after 2 years, they gave me a promotion that included the modem...

is it possible to get 50mbit on DOCSIS 2.0? i got a friend that claims he gets 50mbit on is SB1501 but i recall DOCSIS 2.0 only goes up to 30mbit...

I used to get speeds upwards of 70Mbps on several speedtests a few years ago. The Cox guy was surprised. They have fixed it and I am in a DOCSIS 3.0 area but am still using a DOCSIS 2.0 modem, and it officially caps out at 30 now.

I know if can go beyond that since I had a DOCSIS 3.0 modem for a shot period of time, but did not want to give up my hackable modem for it. The new Surfboards are incredibly difficult to load custom firmware on I've heard..

I find that interesting, I am not saying your wrong but the DOCSIS 2 protocol is unable to obtain those speeds so it seems hard to believe. IF it did work then that was great. Since it sounds like you hacked it then maybe that was the reason?

I was able to call up TW and ask for a reduction and got a pretty good deal I feel. I took my normal rate of $65 for 15x1 and got it moved down to $42 for the same speeds for a year. For an extra $10 I could upgrade to 20x2 but decided not to do that for now. So I guess I will start watching for a new DOCSIS 3 modem here so I don't have to rent one. Hopefully retailers will get more in stock soon and prices will stay fair.

you should keep pushing... im on 30mbit/5mbit paying $50(DOCSIS 3). How i got the deal? i have no idea... TWC called me one day asking to upgrade my net to like 25/2... i just scratched my head and said no thanks... now im scared to call TWC...
They wanted $80 for 50mbit but idk if i really need all that speed...

I know. I didn't know the DOCSIS 2.0 protocol at the time, and this was actually on a different SB modem that wasn't my hacked one. We have an older house and always have had to get the Cox guy to come out every couple months for something else because of the wiring. The speeds if I recall weren't stable. Sometimes it would be 65Mbps+, sometimes it would be less than 30. When I had a Cox technician come out to check why I was having such variations in speeds he also ran speed tests and went "Woah...you have like the fastest speeds in your entire neighborhood..and you're paying for...25/5?"

To this day...on my DOCSIS 2.0 modem technicians are still surprised I'm able to hit 30 and sometimes surpass it just a bit.

They did put something on my line to increase the power or something. I'm not a cable technician so I have no idea what they did.

Almost every cable company does this, Cox monthly fee is even higher. We purchased a modem for $50 at Walmart, and never once paid Cox a cent for a rental. I know someone who used Cox modem until they spent $500 on it because they did not want to buy their own modem.
