TWC charging $3.95 to lease their cable modem - buy your own modem discussion

Time Warner Cable Modem Lease Fee Expands [dslreports.com]

[TWC] Virtually All TWC Customers Face $3.95 Modem Rental Fee [dslreports.com]

recently current customers were exempt and only new customers were required to pay the cable modem lease fee of $2.20, but now everyone will be paying $3.95 very soon!

the modems they lease out cost them about $40, but a lease for one year would add up to about $50!

CableLabs Prepares to Unveil DOCSIS 3.1 [dslreports.com]

remember to get your squaretrade warranty within 30 days of purchase and on a tuesday with a 30% off code. alternative tuesday ST %30 off code

check with your cable for approved modems.

i have decided to purchase the Motorola SB6141.

the SB5101 is a good modem for standard and slower.

check ebay for lower prices, like $80 for the Motorola SB6141. $10-15 for 3 year squaretrade warranty. first year overlaps with manufacture warranty and manufacture warranty prevails. $95 ($80 and $15) is $30 cheaper then the $125 amazon charges plus tax.

This is not what i've been told from twc.

People on dsl reports say docsis 3.0 has no powerboost but twc told me that it does. However, the issue is that all non twc supplied (leased) docsis 3.0 modems are not supplied with a firmware that allows for powerboost which is why we don't see it.

Since I don't know anyone on extreme or wideband with a twc docsis modem I can't really verify that. BUT TWC techs told me many times that docsis 3.0 still has it, but only with their supplied modems.
yes, they could have conveniently left it out of the DOCSIS 3.0 firemware for the purchased modems.

can one of you people reading this check if your TWC DOCSIS 3.0 modem with extreme or wideband has powerboost. you can easily determine this by doing a non-vpn speedtest. the speedtest will show a faster speed then your paid tier level.

Level 3 and their managers are all clueless about it. So if its on purpose, its gotta be at a management level above what anyone in a call center knows about. Their conclusion is "powerboost is enabled in the factory when we supply our firmware. Since your modem doesn't come with our firmware, theres nothing we can do."

Regardless, i'm happy with 15/1 without burst. Can't complain about 5 extra Mbit this week for free!

I had a refurb $18 SB5100 DOCSIS 2.0 delivered from Amazon Today.
Austin Time Warner threw the outside toggle this morning.
Other than misreading the MAC ID a few times,
the service (Basic 3mbps) came alive without issue.
$20/mo ai.

no problems the call did take about 30 minutes on hold. I get the powerboost fine although I am on the standard plan the tests Ive done show 20mb which is what I got before. Never asked what kind of modem I had is there some way they can tell by the MAC ID?

i can confirm that the usage meter turns on when you activate your own modem.

yes, they can tell what modem you have by the MAC address.

they are expanding the test markets for the $5 discount for people that use less then 15MB a month.

the other day things were piss poor slow on the VPN, but w/o the VPN things were okay. then later that night/the next day around 3:30 am the modem rebooted a couple of times. they must have done some upgrades as the speed has increased with and w/o the VPN.

if you purchased your own DOCSIS 3 modem you do not have powerboost.

What pisses me off about this whole thing is why is the modem that I currently have (RCA), and have been using for the last 5 years without incident, is not an approved modem anymore if I want to go buy the same model to avoid the monthly fee. If I do nothing and say nothing I can continue to use this modem and pay them $4 a month so it obviously works on their network when I'm paying them every month for old technology so why can't I just buy this old modem and use it to avoid the fee...

I smell a shady partnership with the modem providers on the "approved" list myself. If there's more to it somebody smarter than I am is welcome to enlighten me.

Just my two cents FWIW. OK...rant over...thank you for your audience.

Anybody successful with getting a month or two credit on the fee? I just noticed this today (am on Autopay so don't see my bill every month). Ticks me off I just wasted $8 when I had my own modem sitting around - sneaky to just put it in fine print on our bill in October then start charging the very next month.

Wow. I had NO idea that TWC started to charge a $3.95/mo lease fee. I noticed it in a thread about the new 10/1 > 15/1 speeds. Sure enough, logged in online to check our bill and there's an extra $3.95/mo charged.

Well.. That made it easy. My modem is OLD so I just ordered the SB6121 from Amazon for $79. I'll return the old one to my local TWC office after I get the new one activated and I'll be a happy camper. I'm paying $29.95/mo now for the standard 10/1 (now 15/1) service as a promo which was supposed to only be for 6 months I think, but it's been longer than that for sure.

FYI, I was able to activate an old modem that I had squirreled away in the back of my closet. This older Motorola Surfboard SB5120 is not on the TWC "approved" list for customer owned modems, although it is on the leased approved list. The CSR didn't even ask what make/model all she wanted was the MAC address for provisioning.

This may be an option if your don't want to buy a brand new modem and don't care about top-tier speeds. I'm still getting nearly 30 Mbps down with this circa-2006 modem.
