Time Warner Cable Modem Lease Fee Expands [dslreports.com]

[TWC] Virtually All TWC Customers Face $3.95 Modem Rental Fee [dslreports.com]

recently current customers were exempt and only new customers were required to pay the cable modem lease fee of $2.20, but now everyone will be paying $3.95 very soon!

the modems they lease out cost them about $40, but a lease for one year would add up to about $50!

CableLabs Prepares to Unveil DOCSIS 3.1 [dslreports.com]

remember to get your squaretrade warranty within 30 days of purchase and on a tuesday with a 30% off code. alternative tuesday ST %30 off code

check with your cable for approved modems.

i have decided to purchase the Motorola SB6141.

the SB5101 is a good modem for standard and slower.

check ebay for lower prices, like $80 for the Motorola SB6141. $10-15 for 3 year squaretrade warranty. first year overlaps with manufacture warranty and manufacture warranty prevails. $95 ($80 and $15) is $30 cheaper then the $125 amazon charges plus tax.

looks like it would take almost 3 years for a $138 DOCSIS 3 modem at $4/mo. to pay for itself.

3 yr. squaretrade warranty is $21.

total cost would be 3.3 years to pay for itself.

thats for sure. like the article says, it might be wise to wait a little while before buying a modem and getting it provisioned. this will give you time to shop for a good deal. although, the price on the SB4161 has been going up from $75 > $99 > $125 > $139! O.O

also, might be worth the wait to get a DOCSIS 3.1 modem when they start selling soon and TWC lists them.

DOCSIS 3.1 is in the early planning stages and will require carrier network upgrades, I won't expect hardware anytime soon.

So are most people buying modems then? 3 years is kind of a long payback period on a technology item like this. I have had to replace my TWC modem before because it just dies, lighting, etc so if I bought one, it would be on me to replace it, Frown I would like a DOCSIS 3 modem though.

If you're a home phone customer it's nightmarish. They insist that you have two modems connected at once. So that's two outlets, with a cable splitter and two lines, two modems on your desk with one running phones and the other running internet. It's a total cluster F, and there's no way around it it seems. I tried buying the same modem I have now but the guy on the phone wouldn't have it, you'd think I was trying to break the law by the way he was acting.

You mean the 6141? What does the SquareTrade warranty cost then? Have you ever used SquareTrade for a cable modem? My concern is downtime, too, a day or two might be ok, but a week without internet would be killer. Since these are the hot modem for the moment the price has went way up and they are hard to find right now. I figure I will rent for a month or two until prices drop and supply is available and then buy one.

I am sure that since you own the modem you will have full control over it.

i can never remember those numbers =P

on ebay the warranty is $20 when you buy the modem. so it would be 30% off around that price with a tuesday coupon. you would buy the warranty directly from the ST website with the coupon.

parents just recently purchased their first flat panel tv so i got them a 4 yr warranty from ST.

ST turn around is 5 days, they say and guaranty that.

if they cant fix it they cut you a check for the cost that you paid.

even though the first year over laps the items own 1st year waranty, the items own warranty prevails. so its worth getting the 4th year for a few dollars more.

Completely OT, but...

If anyone decides that fee is just too much and wants to switch over to Directv, pm me, Directv has a referral program... $100 over 10 moths for us both Smilie

Back to the regular scheduled program Big Grin

Just sayin...

Smilie

Does the referral program work in tandem with any advertised deal they might be running? I'll be keeping an eye for their lowest priced package on BF or so.

I just checked their site. I am not a fan of having to pay extra because the discounts drop off the second year. Hopefully BF will bring something good!
