Took the plunge.. Never owned a high quality vacuum before and have heard good things about Dyson for years. This model has really good reviews and the price is extremely good, even for a refurb.
Just bought my first home and have a dog. Hopefully this Dyson will work well. If not, the return policy and warranty seem pretty good too. |

The wife and I were going through at least a vacuum a year before we bought our Dyson. Our Dyson has lasted 3 years and more than paid for itself. Still have 2 years left on the warranty too! Of course I didn't pay retail price for it either.....
Also, the difference in how much dirt the Dyson picked up over the vacuum it replaced was a "Whoa" moment. We did the comparison just to see for ourselves. |

I have always lived with dogs, and we would literally burn through vacuums every 6 months. The first Dyson I bought lasted 5 years. I am on my 2nd Dyson, and will never buy a different brand. These things may seem "plasticy," but they are built to last. The stuff my Dyson picks up continues to blow my mind. If you are on the fence, try it. You won't regret it.

Got the original Dyson Animal a few years back (the kind without the ball) - it definitely has more suction power than regular vacuums - we literally went over the floor with a Eureka and then went over it again with a Dyson and it practically filled up with dirt.
However - the cyclone filter-type thing in the canister tends to have its holes clogged up VERY quickly. Some people rinse it out but I hear that can cause mildew. I have to keep taking it outside and brushing it off or blasting it with canned air to keep the thing running smoothly. It works fine but it's definitely messy and more work than I thought I was going to do. |

I wouldn't say they get horrible reviews, but they are a bit overhyped. I did a lot of comparrison shopping with actual models in my hand when I was looking for a vacuum for my home. I ended up with a sanitaire after seriously considering a Dyson. Completely satisfied with my decision. I wanted a vacuum that I could feel confident that I could maintain and keep for the next 20 years. The user serviceability on a Dyson leaves much to be desired.

I wouldn't buy a Dyson again since they are so expensive and there are now cheaper ($80 to $100 from costco) bagless alternatives like the Hoover Windtunnel that seem to work just as fine in my experience. If the hoover dies, I won't care as much since I paid 1/4 the cost of the DC17. |

I would seriously look at the new Hoover ($130) over the Dyson. Buy it with the Amex and they bump up the warranty time. So, how else is Dyson going to pay for all the promo, legal, and tooling? But, even though this is Slickdeals, I wasn't too cheap to not buy a subscription to Consumer Reports. They are credible. |
