The constitutions of most of our States and of the United States assert, that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves, in all cases to which they think themselves competent, or they may act by representatives, freely and equally chosen; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed; that they are entitled to freedom of person, freedom of religion, freedom of property, and freedom of the press. -Thomas Jefferson, June 5, 1824

This happened to the cat that our family owned when I was growing up. Something about the "ash" content of the food caused it. We were not longer allowed to feed it fish-flavored cat food.
The worst part (for the cat at least) is it was a boy cat and it had to have surgery and was ... Hmmm... How to put it... The urethra was shortened... A lot... so it looked like a girl cat. Back in the 80s it was about $2000 to save our kitty. My mom used to go around and say "Be nice to our $2000 cat!" - sent by iPhone App Deals & Steals 3.5.6 - |

March of 2011, happened to our cat. I remember the date because I documented it here.
http://slickdeals.net/f/2765723-N...chores-now The food the doctors tell you that you need is crazy expensive...but we found either an Iams or Purina at Walmart that is twice as much as the regular stuff but one quarter as much as the special doctor stuff. So far 1.5 years without even the SLIGHTEST issue. *knock on wood*

I'm sorry Scamps...I hope he gets well asap and it's nothing serious.
I know how those vet bills are...we lost our first MinPin to diabetes about 4 years ago. All I wanted to do was save my dog so bad. He got insulin twice a day for a year and was at the vet like every other week with complications...etc. Good thing I was working major overtime then. At the time I didn't think about the money but it sure did add up now that I look back. You don't even want to know. Shit, my husband never knew what I was spending But hey, you just do the best you can.

If you suspect an abdominal obstruction in your cat dont delay. Take them immediately to a animal hospital.
It will be an excruciating death and can come quickly for the poor furry friend (often in less than 24 hrs) when the bladder ruptures. Luckily we caught it in time and we get to pic up our cat today. Sometimes they have to reinsert a catheter if they start having more issues passing urine. He had small crystals in the urinalysis. http://www.thepreventivevet.com/_..._Prepared/ Last edited by Scampsters; 10-05-2012 at 06:55 AM.. My three legged cat Runty just darted up the cat tree and is cleaning my windows for me by licking off the condensation. Last edited by Scampsters; 10-05-2012 at 07:22 AM.. |

He was listless even in the cat carrier on the way home but as soon as we got him inside he was flicking his tail excitedly and rubbing up on me all the time. Vet said he was frustrated because the cat was listless and barely moving around sitting on the blanket and not even moving to pee. Totally change in personality when we got him home. The cat is really attached to me more than the others but this was alot more than usual. They couldnt even get him to eat but he voraciously ate when he was here. He is dribbling urine and what looks like a little 'spraying'. Vet prescribed a muscle relaxant but i wasnt convinced the cat needed it. So i called back and asked if the muscle relaxant was really necessary and might be actually making him pee uncontrollaby. The vet said it was possible and i could simply administer the muscle relaxant if the cat displayed signs of pain again or stopped urinating. The crystals might actually reform. |

I've had this happen to two of my cats, one very recently. I believe this primarily happens with male cats. My first cat was unblocked and has been fine ever since (10 years now), but my other cat who got blocked recently ended up having to have a perineal urethrostomy. Basically they cut off the penis and make a wider opening in order to prevent blockages.
I knew right away with my 2nd cat that it was a blockage. He kept going in and out of his litter box and nothing was coming out. It is a very scary and stressful situation because they can die if you don't get them to the vet in time. After they sent my cat home, he actually ended up getting blocked again. Twice within 48 hours. That is when I was recommended by the vet to have the perineal urethrostomy surgery done or else he might have just repeatedly kept getting blocked. The vet said that some people actually end up putting cats down who have this sort of problem because it ends up being too costly. I didn't want to risk him getting blocked again, so I went ahead and told them to do PU surgery. All in all it ended up costing me a few grand for everything and caused a lot of stress. He is 7 years old, so hopefully he still has half his life left or more. He has been fine now for around 6 months. I have also switched all of my cat's diets and now feed them only canned food. No more dry food ever again. I have read that dry food is one of the main causes of these blockages.
