I was also in a similar situation. I figured 16 gb of memory would be sufficient for my workstaion (3ds max, autocad, adobe, revit, etc). I currently have 12 gb of memory in my system and have maxed out my memory on multiple occasion, so I made the conclusion that it would not hurt bumping it up to 32 gb, as I am building a new x79 system with a gen 3 i7 processor. The x79 systems run best with quad channel memory, so I was in the situation of choosing 4x4 = 16gb or 8x4 = 32gb. In the end, I decided that going with 8x4 = 32 gb would be the best long term solution (more future proof) as I feel 8 gb sticks will obviously become the norm in the near future.
