All depends on which seed you buy...for instance I am going to use Scotts Southern Gold, which is about 99% grass seed. There is also the argument that the coating they use (which makes up the 50% non-seed material you mention) causes a higher germination rate, which makes up for having less actual seed. Not saying I agree with that (I don't have much experience with this) but thought I would mention it.
