Thread Details

I believe this is similar, if not the exact model, as the deal at Buy.com yesterday.

Ollie's B&M has the Pantech 7" Android Multimedia Tablet & Color eReader for $39.99. (Refurb)

Before everyone trashes this as junk, remember that this is a $40 tablet and should not be compared with an iPad or other higher-end units. As such, this seems like a decent deal for a school-aged child that does not need a full laptop but wants access to Facebook, email, etc.

The specs:

7" Digital TFT LCD w/ 800x600 pixels
Android OS
2GB shared internal memory
Wifi 802.11 b/g
Mini USB 2.0 port
Stereo Mini Headphone jack
Touch screen w/ virtual keyboard
Automatic Screen Orientation

Supports PDF/EPUB eBooks
MPEG4 video
JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP images
MP3, WAV, AAC audio with external volume up/down controls

Compatible with Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7 & Mac OS X

Also supports DOC, DOCX, TXT, XLS, XLSX, CSV, PPT, PPTX

$600+ for an Ipad 3; this is $40. I bought a low end tablet for my daughter in May and spent about $85 for it. A month or so in, it was dropped in our kitchen and screen was shattered with misc pieces of the case all over. This is 1/2 the price and will be more than adequate.

Dittos on the Romney support, though.

While one might be tempted by the $40 price .. two warnings. The touchscreen is terrible. You (or your kids) will be very frustrated trying to swipe, touch, anything, and the tablet won't register your movements. Gaming would be terrible.

Second, this tablet slow. Not just "slow in comparison to an iPad" .. but SLOW. Forget about using this for email or facebook. Those are complicated web apps that require a decent CPU to process through their pages. I've used slow tablets before .. at some point, you just give up.

At best, this could be used as a book reader, since the slowness and terrible screen won't be that big a deal .. although even the Engadget review has "turning pages is extremely flaky" .. and that's because of the bad touchscreen.

Sorry .. even at $40, this is a bad deal. Maybe $10.

My 12yo dropped her tablet, which just happened to be the same day my 15yo dropped her laptop down the steps. Luckily, I picked up the Squaretrade warranty on the laptop.

I actually bought 2 of these tablets and was using it for myself last night and I was pretty satisfied with it. I prefer my laptop, of course, but this was fine for email and generic surfing, etc. No issues with the touchscreen at all--both the supplied stylus and finger swipes were responsive and accurate.
