Wireless TV for my HDTV? Roku vs AppleTV vs GoogleTV vs whatever...
I want to connect my HDTV to my home's wireless internet. And I am confused. What do the SD techies recommend? I like my Android phone. It works okay. I'm not a big Apple fan. Since I'm a tightwad, I think their products are a bit overpriced. Roku seems okay. Decent reviews. But I've never heard of this company. I do want something simple. Something that I can plug in, and have running within an hour or two. I don't want a science project. I don't want to dedicate a $300+ PC that will plug into my TV. |

I want to access streaming video such as Netflix, Hulu, Crackle, free stuff like old TV shows, old movies... and perhaps occasionally play an MP4 file from my cell phone. I recently upgraded to a 10+mb connection, but I don't know what's available out there to stream to my TV. |

Know that for Hulu you will need a Hulu plus account I believe. |

I have three streaming devices: A Sony PS/3, an AppleTV, and the TV itself.
The TV is by far the worst. Poor video quality. The AppleTV is ok. They just added Hulu Plus. It's only $99 and it's fast and easy to use. The PS/3 is also very good. My biggest complaint is that it often needs you to re-enter your e-mail address and password for each service, and it takes a long time to use their onscreen keyboard to do that. So you can get Hulu and Netflix both with the PS/3 and AppleTV. You pay $7/month for each of those services, but I don't pay for cable TV any more. You can also order movies on demand with either one. Between the two, I prefer PS/3 because it is also a Blu-ray player, but PS/3 is triple the cost. |

I used to use a WD TV Live before i got a smart TV.
I picked WD TV over everything else since i attach an external drive to it. I stuck one on a Roku(older version) and about 10 of 100 movies would play. Of course, if your just getting it for netflix and Hulu, any devices would work... |

Other then that the Roku would not be bad (got 2 of them also), you might be able to play the mp4's via usb not sure if mp4's are supported. There is also the chance that a blu ray player will do a lot of this also, My LG player does most of what you want. I would look more in to what you want to watch on it and where you are going to get the content from as that matters a lot. Netflix - Most devices support this Hulu- You plan on paying a monthly fee for both netflix and hulu? Crackle- not sure about support for this. free stuff like old TV shows, old movies - where will you get these from other then netflix???? |
