Just to clarify these are the bigger ones (41) with a 5.25" woofer.
The ones that usually go on sale for $50 are the 21 models with a 4" woofer. Depending on your usage the cost difference is well worth it. But these are also pretty big. The 21's are already too big for a lot of space-limited applications like on a desk. These 41's are 14" tall x 8" wide. Those are common dimensions for a 6.5" 2-way, really big for a 5.25" bookshelf. 7.9" x 13.8" x 8.7" (W x H x D) / 10.25 lbs. |

Pioneer BS-SP41LR Speakers $85 AC FS Newegg
This is the lowest price I've seen in awhile. The are updating this line of speakers designed by Andrew Jones of TAD and as far as I can tell are not going to be replacing this speaker. Get them while you still can. Pioneer BS41 [newegg.com] $85 after coupon Coupon EMCJNNE72 ends 10/8 Don't forget cashback sites or Discover cashback. I have a pair of these hooked up to a Sonos amp and it sounds neutral with good mid-bass. Not up to par with my Totem Model One Signatures, but killer for the money. The drawback is that these are 6 ohm speakers, but modern receivers should be able to drive these to reference levels without issue. The Totems are even more power hungry (4 ohm) but able to be driven by the Sonos amp. Last edited by momswgn; 10-05-2012 at 09:39 AM.. |

Looks like the entire line is on sale. I just can't get passed the speaker grills, nor the weak design on the efficiency. The reason Pioneer made these speakers such power hogs is to protect the drivers. Less warranty returns if the drivers aren't pushed to their limits (which in theory is a good thing, but you may never realize their potential with a weak receiver, and you could overheat your receiver trying to reach those limits). They did a nice job on the veneer and cabinets, then put those car door style kick grills on them.

These speakers were designed for excellent sound from a small enclosure. The lower efficiency rating is a result of obtaining deeper bass response from such a small speaker. Higher sensitivity speakers may get louder with the same power input, but at the expense of deeper bass response. These Pioneers prioritize quality of sound over quantity of sound. Your reasoning for "protecting the drivers" is actually backwards. By requiring more power to get the same volume levels, you are not protecting the drivers. |
