Would really like to buy one, but the wife would KILL ME if I did. FWIW - I've never seen these on clearance!

There's a few in store around me but I am not sure my wife would let me have another grill. Got a Weber S-330, 2 Smokey Joes, 1 18.5 WSM. Was waiting on a deal for a 22.5 One Touch Gold. 26 is too big for what I need.

Brand new 22.5 one touch gold is normally $149. This is cheaper. Bigger is better!

Here to brag, I did get the Performer at HD for $100 earlier this year.

Couldn't agree more.

I seriously debated posting this to see if the wife would let me get one. Because these will get snapped up quickly!
I bought it after falling for the over-hyped reviews. Its NOT a fine piece of grilling perfection. Because of the location of the vent hole on the lid, the gril gets hotter on one side. There is hardly any cooking difference between this grill and a grid which costs $50.
The ONLY good thing about this grill is the catch pan which collects all the charcoal remains. But not worth the $150.
Me thinks people like it because its made in USA. "made in USA" does not give anyone the right to charge double for it.
Edit: This is a bigger size. So the price is good since I bought the 22" for $150.

Definitely a nice find. Every store here is still $299. I'd buy a couple of those if I can find one for that price.

Do you know if the handles under the kettle get hot enough to burn your hands?
The handle and vent can get fairly hot, but not so hot you can't work with them, especially if you are wearing gloves (trust me, some grilling/welding gloves are worth it). I would imagine the side handle could get pretty warm, but you shouldn't need to use it while it's hot.

I have a 22.5" Weber Performer, and often I wish I had a 26.5". Grilling should really be done with a 2-level fire (check out the grilling expert blogs), which cuts your cooking surface in half for some tasks. If you ever grill for a large group (say 10+), you'll like the extra space.

On a 2-level fire, you'd place the vents over the food on the indirect side. It works better that way. If you need to do even-fire cooking, you can leave the lid off or leave it slightly ajar to change the air-flow.

The biggest difference in this and a $50 grill is build quality. Namely, the baked-on finish will keep it from rusting like a $50 grill. Ash has a high pH, which breaks down the metal faster. Webers last a long time, so cost less than Walmart grills over time. In fact, you'll probably replace the charcoal grate several times and the cooking grate at least once before you replace your Weber. Some people have had the same Weber for 15+ years with no rust on the kettle, and no handles falling off.

EDIT: Sorry, I checked my science here. High pH should retard rust formation. Regardless, the ash makes the grill rust faster if you don't clean it off every time, most likely because it attracts and holds moisture. This is of very little concern in the Weber's porcelain kettle, though it is still a good idea to clean it out regularly.

I went to the Laguna Niguel # 1077 store as the inventory checker said they had 5. They did but they were not marked down. I even had them check the price in the computer. They said someone broke the number one rule and called earlier.

Just checked Chicago area store #1983 (5 in stock), #1901 (4 in stock) and #1908 (2 in stock) over my lunch hour and they are all still priced $299.99 on the shelf and in the computer. Store #1901 did have a big ranch’er on the floor marked down to $799 from $1299. Oh well, I will check back in with a couple of them next week to see if they start to move down from there full price.

This is a good deal since its bigger.
I have the 22.5" and being able to throw on another rack of ribs on the bigger grate would be fantastic.

For the vents? Never had an issue with them

I have a 22.5, and once the grill is hot, the only handle I would touch is the one on the lid. You probably shouldn't move the grill once its hot anyway.

Thanks for all the answers. I kinda figured they'd be hot, but first-hand experience is key.

Actually I would like Weber to put a heat-resistant handle on the vent handles. It's not for when I'm moving the grill, it's for when after I've loaded up the plate with the food, and I have barely one hand free: One to carry the food plate(s), and the other to close the lid, close the vents, and open the back door to the house, and not use my feet! I'm not a waiter, but if I can do all that and not drop the plate of food, I'm gold! If I have to grab another oven mitt just to close the vents, or use the back of my tongs, it's just not as easy.

My parents purchased a red Weber kettle in 1980 that still works great. It's got the 3 vents at the bottom and one top of the lid. The lid handle is made of wood. The only rust on it is where I've dropped the lid on the concrete and chipped the red paint off. My brother and I won a state BBQ championship on our beat-up grill, beating out the guys with the huge trailer-size bbq rigs! I salivate over the new Webers with one-touch this and that, but I like the classic too.
