2.5 Scorpio blue drive won't spin up
I've tried putting this 640 gb laptop size drive in two different enclosures. Both times I hear drive try to spin up and then hear a dual monotone buzzing sound, the first buzz being a lower tone than the second.I put the drive in my freezer for 4 hrs but same prob. Was I supposed to try drive right out of freezer? I let in warm back up first. Drive is still under warranty but I'd like to get data off drive.

When you used the enclosure what are the cables you connect the enclosure to the computer with? Could it simply be not enough power provided by the computer to spin the motor up?
if the power is not the case, then Try to wrap the drive with a towel (no enclosure) and connect the drive with SATA data and power cables and put it into the freezer for half hour (leave the other ends of the cables outside). Then try to get the data off it while it's still in the freezer. |
That is to say, as an internal hard drive, plugged directly into the mobo. If it still doesn't work, then it's ready for the trash can. |

so there's a chance this will work when enclosure fails? To be clear my enclosures were previously working with this drive. If this is the case can someone please link me to adapters I'll need to plug drive directly into my desktop Pc MB.
Anyone know how WD RMA works? I checked my warranty and I've got about 10 days left. I don't want to miss this while I order parts to try to take data off. Last edited by leiff; 10-05-2012 at 11:28 AM.. |

And no, I wasn't under the impression that it was a desktop model. FYI: The main difference for connecting a 2.5 vs a 3.5 to another computer through a USB case, is that the 3.5 requires it to be powered up from a 110 volt source (a wall socket in your house), whereas the 2.5 models can be powered up from the USB port. Vague questions receive vague answers . . . . . .

Does the drive have a jumper to change the start-up current and increase the torque of the spindle motor? I remember one type of 2.5" drive having that feature, and it may help if the drive is balky. Don't freeze any drive but just cool it in a refrigerator for a couple of hours because you don't want it to get it below the dew point of the air, which can cause condensation, even inside the drive. Any dew on the drive platters makes it very risky to turn on the drive because moisture acts like glue between the platters and heads, and the heads can literally tear off when the platters start spinning. The freezer trick worked in the old days, with drives under 100 megabytes, especially if they didn't have servos but just used stepper motors to move the heads, because head alignment would change with temperature. Now, freezing doesn't help with that and probably won't do any good, except maybe for the chip that positions the heads and spins the motor. Still I wouldn't risk it. Do not try replacing the circuit board of the drive, even if the board looks 100% identical, because each board's BIOS chip contains information specific to its particular drive, regarding things like the amount of current sent through each head and maybe the amount of current for moving the heads, and apparently that information changes over time as the electronics adjusts to the characteristics of the particular drive. IOW the only safe way to swap circuit boards of identical drives is by transplanting the original BIOS chip to the replacement board. |
