Apply EMAIL10. Total came out to $504.51 after taxes and shipping to California. I would recommend this laptop to any casual users out there who could use the greater amount of screen real estate (1600x900 vs 1366x768), battery life (9-cell vs. 6-cell) and reliability. Since it's a larger 9-cell battery, it will leave a bulge.

NO HDMI

Is 16GB of ram really necessary?

The SSD upgrade makes sense, but 4GB is probably good enough for at least another 6 months to a year.

The Intel HD 3000 graphics --since it's on board video-- uses up some of that ram, so if you plan on doing some gaming, you *might* want to upgrade to 8GB.

Probably not necessary but I figure for $65, the cost is minimal considering the performance boost. I was originally only going to upgrade to 8GB until I saw rkpkv's reply but the price was right after the $10 instant. Plus I constantly have photoshop, illustrator, and dreamweaver open simultaneously.

Here is the HDD caddy I got from Amazon [amazon.com].

This is the SDD from TigerDirect [tigerdirect.com].

Why T420 is much preferable over T520? Care to elaborate?

I just like 14" size. Specs on this thing for $460 is pretty damn slick.

I guess you are right, and not to mention 1lb difference between the two.
On the other hand, 14 inch for a 1600X900 may be a bit too small though.

Since I also got a T420 from an earlier deal, sharing some good info with everyone.

16 GB RAM for 64.99 (Use promo code EMCJNNH48)

Lots of information here [speakerfeature.com] on replacinng RAM and using a caddy

Here is the link to the caddy [ebay.com] Otherwise lenovo sells it in their website - see here [lenovo.com]

Some good documentation on clean windows installation is here [lenovo.com]

Lastly windows can be downloaded from the links in the page from microsoft [microsoft.com]

You will need to select the x17-59186.iso for 64-bit professional edition
Do you need to purchase a separate window 7 to get the key to activate after the installation? Thanks,

The key is on the bottom of the computer. The poster is just letting you know where you can download windows 7 ......which you do not need if you have a windows Dvd/CD

i got a T420 last week for $330 (about the same specs with the HD+ screen) - i was eyeing this T520 but was hoping nobody would post on SD until lenovo offered another big coupon discount like the one last weekend - i think that would have pushed this into the slick $399 range. too bad...

They don't list wifi cards in the outlet for some reason. You can try the chat to ask which one is included.

I bought one of these yesterday after watching inventory for a couple days. Talked to 3 reps asking about the wifi card on this $512 model. They all came back after checking and told me their database hasn't been updated since 10/28 and they would have to email me the info on Monday. I hope the previous poster was right and this has the 2x2 model. From my research the base-line Thinkpad 1x1 card is poor.

I also learned that if you talk to the Lenovo chat reps, take what they tell you with a grain of salt. I got a variety of incorrect answers to several inquires.
could you please post here which wifi card it has once you receive it.

Of course, no problem, but these units will be gone by then. They built the T520 with four Wi-Fi cards options and (as stated) they don't list which one you're getting in the Outlet.

I figured if the Wi-Fi card gave me enough problems I could always swap it out, it's a 5-minute ordeal. Do note that Lenovo Whitelists their WLAN cards, so you'll have to either buy it from Lenovo or do some BIOS trickery to get it to work.

Update: The Lenovo Outlet shows none of these units left as of this posting.

Nice deal on the T420, I'll keep my eye out for a deal like that myself.

Agreed, good deals at the Lenovo Outlet are frequent enough that posting every one of them gets annoying and kinda ruins it for those that are actively shopping the site. When the Outlet inventory is higher, the prices are lower and the selections is better. Not to mention that Lenovo's website is flakey enough without SD bringing it down, lol. Kinda disconcerting that the computer company you are buying from can't maintain a stable website, but I digress. ... shhhh...
