Gigabyte 660 TI $265 AR

What do you guys think? Which card for 300, 7970 or gtx590? The 7950, I thought about getting if it was low enough as well.

I don't understand the issue. If you're in the market for a vid card, you know the parts numbers. If not, you're not making an informed decision and are simply looking for a low price, in which case any card will do.

If you're looking for something that's not a vid card, you should be familiar enough with that product to know this is not an applicable model number.

I seriously don't understand how it's a problem. An explanation of what you were thinking when you stumbled upon this thread would go a long way to explaining what's wrong with the title. Otherwise, cramming every detail into the title essentially defeats the purpose of a title.

Not just now but have been offering superior overclocking this entire generation and since late June and Catalyst 12.7 beta drivers regained price/performance lead at every price bracket for single-GPUs (7970 GE is also faster than GTX680, especially now since NV officially denied MSI and EVGA voltage control). Of course NV cards have their own advantages with features:

- Dual-Link Dual-DVI off 1 card
- Native ambient occlusion in the drivers
- Adaptive V-Sync
- TXAA anti-aliasing (although this is a blurfest and not a real advantage and only 1 game the Secret World has used it...ineffectively)
- PhysX
- Superior performance/watt for 670/680 cards

Strictly from a performance, price/performance and overclocking perspectives, Radeons have regained the lead since 5 months ago!

You can see AMD offers a faster card at every competing price category [computerbase.de] (excluding GTX690) and that's before even taking overclocking into account.

If you are going to buy a 7950, wait for a solid deal on Gigabyte Windforce 3x, MSI TwinFrozr 3 7950 or Sapphire Vapor-X 7950. Right now MSI TF3 7950 is still going for $300 [amazon.com] or so, but it can overclock to surpass GTX680/7970 cards, and rather easily too. At about 1050mhz, HD7950 is already as fast as a GTX680 [techpowerup.com]. This overclock can be reached below Tahiti's stock voltage of 1.175V on good after-market 7950s (Gigabyte Windforce 3x, MSI TF3). This is why the 660Ti at $265 isn't that hot.

The explanation is simple -- HD7950 still has 32 ROPs and 384-bit bus of the flagship 7970 but only slightly less shaders and texture units. It's basically an underclocked slightly neutered HD7970. GTX660Ti has 25% less ROPs and 25% lower memory bus than the flagship 680. This is why the 660Ti is a real mid-range product while 7950 is more high-end but factory underclocked in a way because AMD wanted to launch earlier and went conservative with clocks.
