With Canon in particular, depending on your needs, it may be a much wiser idea to buy a used/refurbished older model for $50-75 that uses more tanks than "one black, one color" — which surprisingly may be much cheaper long-term, with a lower cost-per-page AND higher-quality photo prints, since the higher-end models use separate ink tanks for each color. (I wonder why this is, perhaps supply and demand?)

The MP560 and some others are good choices, since you can find a full ink refill cartridge set for about $5 a pop. The MP560 is really robust and has a mature history of excellence, it's kind of funny because I thought it was discontinued but then I saw it restocked at Amazon.

Yes, you can print text with any printer. You can't print decent photos with any printer though, that's why they are called photo printers.

Great deal. I just bought one for almost the same price at Target and that was 50% off. I have the MP495 and it's been a good printer. Wireless printing actually works well and the ink cartridges (if you buy genuine Canon) are made in Japan. I bought the MP499 as a backup and it uses the same ink as my MP495 anyway.
