After reading a bit of this thread I'd definitely recommend Craigslisting an iPhone and having it unlocked on ebay. It's weird because my first iPhone (first gen) I bought refurbished off AT&T for some unreal price. It was like....$150 or something but this deal is bad.
I got a 32gb pristine 4s off CL for $280 got it unlocked for 8 bucks.
Gotta do a bit of haggling and deal with craigslist but it's worth it.
1) Bundle with a plan, buy the phone and cancel the plan without activating the service on ATT
You wont be charged the Monthly plan cost nor the activation fees ($36).
2) To get it unlocked from ATT, need to be in service for 60days.
3) Will not affect credit history, but the website did ask for my SSN when I placed the order.
4) Apple Refurbished.
5) No ETF if I don't activate the service with ATT.
I purchased a white 16gig for $323 (with CA tax). Yet to decide whether I will keep it or not.
Had another conversation with ATT CC. He seemed to be more accurate and pissed me off big time. These ATT CC's have all half baked info!
Here are the breakup of charges if you want to purchase it and cancel immediately or within one month:
$299 + TAX + $36 (Activation) + $59.99 (Monthly Plan) = $417.99 + $10-20 (unlock) ~= $427.99
Not huge savings, because fleabay has factory unlocked i4S in the range of $450-$485.
Now wondering should I cancel the order or not!
Assuming you can cancel the wireless plan and still keep the phone...keep the order, this is a very low price on this phone. I'd expect it to sell out. People are able to sell iPhone 4 for $275 (unlocked), iPhone 4S $400-450.
Cancel of course
Do anyone know how to activate or unclock this iphone ?
With Unlock Fusion, it looks like you can unlock pretty much any AT&T iPhone, I've used this 4 times myself.
Based on your questions you should seriously consider doing your purchase at the store.
yes. this is a great deal, considering you can cancel plan and avoid monthly + activation fee if done within 3 days, i believe!
anyone who says a refurbished (by apple?) 4S 16GB in-box for $300+tax is not a good price is only being biased against apple.
even on CL, you can easily flip it for at least a $100 more.
and anyone who already has an existing off-contract line with AT&T, like me, can easily get it unlocked by them for free, just by using your sim card with the phone and filling out the online form.
i called a rep and he confirmed it. otherwise, it's $8 to unlock on eBay.
this was a great find. thanks OP!
Yep, included the link below.
Can you tell me how did you unlock for 8 bucks ?
This is as easy a flip as it gets. You can unlock and flip for a ~$75-$100 profit (right now). Last week I sold one 16GB 4S for $475, this week another for $435.
anyone know when att started charging a $36 upgrade fee? they didn't have that BS 2 years ago
Upgrade fee or activation fee?
Early upgrade fee is $250...activation fee is $36. Last year, when the 4S released they had it, but you could usually call in if you were had a good standing account and they were crediting back the activation fees.
i had a chat with AT&T rep, and she just confirmed that you do indeed get to keep the phone even if service is cancelled within 3 days, for anyone who was still unsure.
here's the truncated transcript:
