Music as a Time Out Alert?
My laptop starts playing music after about 10 minutes of inattention when I have it in "always on" power mode. Does anyone have a clue what this is and how to stop it?It's a Samsung R580 Laptop running Windows 7 that I've had for 18 months or so. Normally I keep it some sort of balanced power mode that puts it to sleep after X minutes. But my husband needed to access some files from its hard drive via our home network and I changed it temporarily to "always on". I was in the room reading, and this music just starts playing after about 10 minutes. As soon as I touch the mouse, it stops. I shut down all applications so nothing but the desktop displayed (and - of course - anything running in the background). Still - music pops back on after a bit. I don't use my laptop for music. There's none stored on it other than whatever sample music might have come with it. Any ideas? |

The easiest way to find out is to open the task manager and leave it open till the music plays, to see what program is coming on to play the music.
It would also be helpful to tell us which OS you have. What music plays? If I had to guess, I would say that it's an actual Samsung program/theme, as there are no music options in power settings, nor in the "Personalize" section. I've seen some laptops that had special themes for store display. After X amount of time, some visuals would appear with sound. Don't remember if it was actual music, but it definitely had sound. |

Thanks all, I'm pretty it was that particular screen saver as it didn't happen when I selected a different one. When I was in the room reading and it happened (repeatedly), the screen saver would be engaged when I looked at the computer (so I couldn't see any applications, including Task Manager). As soon as I touched the mouse, the music and screen saver would stop.
This just seems very odd to me to develop such a screen saver and then have this feature hidden. It was kind of background music, maybe piano. Seems like it should STATE somewhere that's part of it or have a setting to turn it off. Oh well, I liked the waves but something else will suffice. I appreciate all the suggestions! |
The only time I've seen it (to the best of my recollection) was on a floor model laptop I bought from BestBuy. It's my belief that BB themselves, loaded the screensaver/audio program, and not the manufacturer. If your machine was new out of the box, then someone made a booboo somewhere. When I worked in electronics (a long time ago) we frequently repacked floor models to look brand new. The trick was to open the box from the bottom, and then reseal it with identical tape. Most people only looked at the top of the box anyway, to determine if it was new and unopened. If yours was supposed to be brand new, my guess is that it spent some time on the shelf, or at the very least, was opened and prepped as a demo. |
