question about radar braking in cars

does anyone have one of the newer cars with the radar braking system?

it senses how close you are to the car in front of you and if you are 4 seconds starts chiming and auto braking.

My buddy has a 2012 volvo s60 that does that. They all come with standard city braking (up to 19mph) but have a more advanced option up to 50mph. Note it will not auto brake at night. He has the t6awd. The system works well. Lots of folks here will say that the feature is silly and you dont need babysitters and that drivers should pay attention. However, the fact remains that drivers do get distracted or for whatever other reasons cause accidents. These systems really do help prevent or significantly minimize them.

does it say why it wont work at night?

It only needs to work once to pay for itself.

I believe its because it uses a combination of sensors 1. radar on bumper 2. camera behind rear view. The camera cannot operate accuratley at night.
I think it still beeps and warns you based on radar but will not brake.

wont prevent tailgating 1. system can be turned off. 2. it lets you get pretty close before engaging (you can also adjust how close you need to be before it warns. 3. I belive if you keep pressing the accelerator it will overide the system.

Four seconds seems pretty generous, I was taught three seconds in driver's ed, and I hear people saying they were taught two seconds.

So what is the question? Different manufactures systems work differently. Not all of them have a visual camera. Some use radar combined with lasers too.

The seconds rule is variable depending on road weather conditions and time of day.

Commuting in work traffic in MA, you basically want to leave less than a car's distance between you and the other guy, even when going 65mph. Otherwise some doofus will jam in the free space. Scary but effective.
