I am a "she" and don't consider myself to be "isolated" just seems to be more acceptable in my mind to strike up "friendly" conversation online...sarcasm must be the theme. No, I don't make a habit of talking to strangers, it would be pretty awkward. So, what's wrong with wanting to know about how other people are doing without being treated like the "new guy"?

No? Happens to me all the time. I'm cool with it, but sometimes I am in a hurry and feel a bit bad for having to brush people off so I can get my stuff done.

Small talk is ok. I was in the store once, waiting in line- and a guy (way older than me) asked me (out of nowhere) if I ever got on CL "missed connections" I said "uuuh, not really" it was odd & pretty creepy. So, I went on to missed connections-and he wrote an ad..yeah, that he wanted to "get to know me better" So, the moral of the story is , NO, I don't initiate conversations with strangers in public. "Hi" "bye" "how are you" is acceptable. SD is totally anonymous so, I figured it wouldn't seem creepy or weird.

Usually I get people who want to tell me their life stories: how they ended up moving out to where they are now, their medical history, the kind of car they're saving up for, that kind of thing. Doesn't seem weird or creepy to me, but it happens as often as not when I go shopping or something. Once in a while it surprises me when people get a little grabby. I'm not particularly protective of my personal space, so I suppose it's mainly one of nature's ways of reminding me to expect the unexpected.

I admit it can be a little amusing sometimes when I realize that somebody starts talking to me because they think they know me...but they don't. And you can tell they're trying to think of where they know me from, but are far too bound up by social propriety to actually ask.

That's exactly why a lot of new SD users won't post on SD, a lot (not all) of the "established" users can be so rude & critical. If I'm getting the wrong impression from your comment, I apologize, but, actually when I posted in the lounge, my intention was to get to know fellow SD users (since I'm on SD on a regular basis) not be the brunt of the joke. Now I know what to expect if I ever post again.
