Agree that it costs less, but Consumer Reports has Tide detergents ranked 1-6 and 8 while Sears ranked 11.

That depends on the peoples' needs. We generally need heavy soil removal and strong smell removal. (Kids Pets). I have found that Ultra is better at cleaning. Ultra leaves virtually no scent on the clothing as well. Good for my allergies. In our case, Ultra is far superior to Tide. When we used HE Tide, our washer smelled of mold and mildew. With Ultra it does not.

can't you get the 100oz Tide on sale in stores for $10 or less?

The problem I found with Ultra is that it would cause my clothes to shrink quite drastically, while I never had any shrinkage with Tide. Just my experience, not necessarily the same for everyone.

I would think that would be a result of the drying method. Why do you feel the detergent played a role in shrinking the clothing? We have never experienced this problem.

You can't use non HE in an HE machine because HE detergent creates less sods. This is because in the HE machine, there is less space. Using non HE in an HE machine will likely cause it to overflow and leave bubbles all over the ground (just like using normal hand dishwashing soap in a dishwasher, my sheltered roommate did that once :-().

Also, dirty oil is less lubricating that clean oil. If the oil doesn't flow well enough, then its not lubing the engine. Technically, as long as it doesn't gunk up, the oil should be OK for the car. Car manufacturers are there to save their asses just in case that happens. Not like oil can gunk up under 5K miles, even though when you change your oil, your oil pan still has old oil that doesn't get drained out completely. Lastly, oil is consumed by the car in small quantities. If you are not going to change your oil, check on its level.

Here is what I know for sure. Whenever I try to use non HE detergent or softener in my machine I get an error message and the washer stops washing. When I switch back to HE, it is fine.

Less water is used in HE machines....hence HE (high efficiency). That's why low-sudsing HE detergent is needed.
