If the US instituted a legislation (similar to other contries) where people who are on the donor lists, are the ONLY ones allowed to be on the recipient lists, you would get a much higher participation. It would eliminate the selfish people from even being able to think about it, who are not willing to donate, even after death either from religious or just personal views, but are perfectly happy to accept when they need it. As to being able to afford medical care, if someone is at certain income level, they qualify for a number of programs, medicaid is one of them, at least in NY, healthy NY is a low cost medical insurance plan. However, majority of people CHOOSE not to pay into it, even though they can perfectly afford it, even on a minimum wage, since the cost of coverage is a percentage of their income. Well, if they chose not to pay into it, what do they expect? Do you think under Obama care these same people are going to voluntarily buy medical insurance for $7,000- $14,000 a year? They didn't want to buy it at $2,000 a year (Healthy NY is $160/month for someone earning less than $500/week, or so). There is no free lunch, we all know it. Doctors are not going to work for free when they have half a million dollar loans to re-pay, and med schools are not going to teach them how to be doctors for free, and ambulance chasers are not going to settle for $150 it cost to fix a broken finger. If you want to fix the system, you have to fix the whole system, not just apply band aid. Stop frivolous medical malpractice law suits. Stop ambulance chasers from practicing. Cap the cost of med school. Perhaps, then doctors won't have to charge $200 for a 15 minute session with a patient. 5 TV's in the house with Verizon FiOS and we only pay $3.99/month to connect all 5 of them. Thanks to Ceton InfiniTV4 and CableCard.

Born and raised in the US for 25 years. Moved to Montreal, Quebec at 25, now 33. Had healthcare, and obviously it was much cheaper tax wise in the US, as im from Philadelphia, PA. My healthcare cost me 54 bucks a month before i moved here. Granted i live in the most taxed jurisdiction in North America so its not fair, but it depends where in Canada and the US you live since both are vastly different and you get different quality and levels of service in both places.
I buy everything i can from the US, clothes some high end electronics. I just ship them back to my parents house and bring them back tax free on my trips. I still have my US credit cards, etc. I did buy this xbox though for 99 plus tax is 115 bucks. I can only comment how crazy expensive Montreal is. I can list direct comparison that are up to date if you guys want, but i don't want this to be Canada vs USA. Canada is a great country, but i would be lying if i said i didn't encounter this Canadian inferiority complex when i first moved here which i didn't appreciate. |

i know because i just filled in said paperwork and i've been out of the country 9 years. |

So, if you are refusing to pay into the system, but use the benefits, wouldn't that make you a LEACH? |
