I *think* gunshots usually have an echo type sound, or sonic boom, whereas firecrackers are normally just a single POP.
I believe I've found the solution to obesity in America. Hemispherectomy....no one uses it anyway.

After a firecracker, you usually hear, "that was joyful father, may we have another?". And after a gunshot, you hear "break yo'self ni**a" (or..."I think you got em', Mr. Cheney") |

Sitting here thinking about it I can't think of how to describe the differences but I've always found it easy to determine whether a gunshot is from a shotgun, rifle or handgun. They each have a fairly distinctive sound. I can't say I have ever confused fireworks for gunfire but I imagine it could sound different in a city environment.
For what it's worth it was worth all the while

It is sometimes hard to distinguish the sounds, especially when it's a hand gun. Add in the echos from the sound bouncing off buildings and cars and it can be very hard to tell the difference, especially with certain types of firecrackers. Rifle shots are easier to distinguish though as they have a very different sound from a handgun. Back when I spent a lot of time out on my grandfathers place, I could not only tell it was a rifle but usually could tell what type of rifle it was. So before the hunters got home, we knew who had got a shot (and possibly a deer) and who hadn't fired at all.
Happiness and depression are both feelings, just like joy and anger. It's not feelings that give us problems. It's what we do with them that makes the difference.

if i'm close to it, i like to think i can tell the difference most of the time (i've spent a decent amount of time around both guns and fireworks), but if it's down the block or obscured by some trees, i think most of the subtle parts of the sound that help you actually identify it get muffled, leaving you with a generic bang. |
