But we all know they won't. I agree with you that there should be a more open market on gas. They (California) will probably be adding more taxes on top of the pricey gas as well. Here's the current tax rates.
California 36 cent tax on gas + Other Taxes" include a 2 cpg state UST fee (gasoline and diesel), a 2.25% state sales tax for gasoline, a 9.42% state sales tax for diesel, gasoline and diesel rates are rate + local sales tax
Thanks for the link. Frankly, it looks like CA's gas taxes are pretty much in-line with most other states, though. A quick glance shows that the majority of the states on the list have total taxes per gallon of about 30-40 cents per gallon. The difference between California's 38 cents per gallon tax and Arizona's 19 cents per gallon tax is paltry when the gas price per gallon is $3.50.
This chart shows it all--the "crack spread" is the difference between the cost of a barrel of oil and the price a refinery gets for all the products it creates. IE, profits.
WTI = West Texas Intermediate. IE, that's the profit margin on a barrel of oil refined in the US.
Brent = The profit margin on a barrel of oil refined in the rest of the world.
