I tried paying part of a bill online, got denied, but had a 1.00 pending transaction fee so I had to wait about a week until I got that 1.00 back

I find it difficult to spend the full value of the rewards card, I ended up just buying an Amazon egift card with it

Oh, okay.

Well, that's not AMEX's fault, the blame lies on the company's payment processing system

They charge a $1 pre-authorization fee, and don't remove it for 14 to 30 days, before immediately trying to deduct your purchase amount.

I always wipe out my AMEX cards by sending $1 less than the face value via Amazon Payments to a relative's Amazon Payments Account. Amazon Payment's also charges the $1 pre-authorization fee.

After the charge falls off in 2 weeks or so, I buy a $1 Amazon.com e-Gift Card. This clears the full balance of the card.

Another alternative is to swipe the credit card yourself, but you will be hit with a 2.7% fee.

Apparently, you can also call the # on the back of the AMEX card and request a check for the face value sent to the billing address. I have never done this, but other SDers have reported that it works.

I side with the people crapping on amex prepaid cards, but i've never had a problem with them. Everytime I receive one I just sign in and pay my cable bill online. Has never failed, never had a problem.

Do they not count as recurring bills which specifically these AMEX cards block? Tried to pay my cell phone bill once with this and got rejected.

I find the prepaid cards (visa amex any one of them they are all basically the same rules etc) pretty annoying as well... have a stack of them in my wallet currently... need to go to walmart (its the closest grocery store) and just turn them all into 1 walmart gift card for grocery shopping... hate having to have the clerks (who are generally idiots) have to try to figure out how to do 2 forms of payments...and you have to know the exact balance so you can tell them... 28.31 on this card... ok then now do the remaining balance on my credit card etc...

gas is prob the easiest way to use them... you got a card for 75... ok go tell the cashier 60 on pump 6... then the next time you do 15... and throw that card.. .then fill up the rest of your tank with your credit card...

see. That's just a big pain. Great ideas but a big pain. Which is why great deals like these I tend to think twice.

Rebates kind of suck as it is... (much rather they just put the thing on sale by a lower price) but now it's those pesky Prepaid cards.
