Second, although school is the main reason for the purchase, I definitely intend to play a lot of Borderlands 2 on it. Gaming means heat, heat leads to problems. Hopefully Dell has designed the cooling well enough for this not to be too much of an issue but over a period of years it's nearly unavoidable. Third, I feel like there is great value and longevity in this generation of CPUs and GPUs. I was completely satisfied with my gaming experience on a Gateway with a C2D T7500 and 8800M GTS until recently and it's over four years old now. I can't imagine an i7-3610QM and GT 650M not being still competent or better 3-4 years from now.

I'm desktop guy who's suddenly found a need to take that capability on the road and I'm thinking of this as a 3-4 year investment, one which I'd like to protect. If you go through laptops every other year then maybe you're right about not needing it, but for me this seems like far too much machine to treat as disposable.

Good point, good investment. Agreed, heat could be a problem. This looks better designed then the XPS 15z that was too hot for my taste. Too much power crammed into a small form, hopefully being bigger will make it better. I'm looking to compromise with a capable media center/HTPC/desktop replacement with light gaming. I'm on a 2yr old Gateway i5 laptop that has been solid and fast with SSD. Just looking around in case some amazing deal pops up before Black Friday. Already bought my $99 smartphone and spare $169 1080p 32" HDTV. heh, I'm now playing Borderlands 2 on the spare TV while watching shows on the big screen. Great single player like the first one. Dell outlet is a lot like Borderlands loot. Feels like a slot machine refreshing the page continuously.

How long have dell laptops been lasting for you guys? I haven't purchased a dell laptop before but a bunch of dell desktops. Except for a recent memory ram problem, most of the desktops have lasted just fine after years and years. But then again, they are desktops.

If this 17r lasts me about 2 years I'll be more than happy.

I have E6400 for more than 3 yrs now, and I replaced a new screen by myself today.

I really really like dell, I have a dell M1210 that I've used since 2006, albeit it's slow to todays standards, over that time I've treated this laptop like crap(not on purpose of course) and the only thing that went wrong with it was the hard drive 6 months ago... so in 5.5 years, I just had to replace a hard drive.
I appreciate this a lot because in the same period of time my sister went through 3 hp pavilion laptops (facebook machines) because the screen went wrong, mobo problems, etc, that was ludicrous.

You are correct I optd out SSD, I still dont see paying so much for scratch and dent. I do see you got better video card But i dont think you clickd on the right deal. I added 1 yr full support and mine is also certified meaning it has been certified by Dell technician. Scratch and dents are not certified. Atl east thats what i was told by Dell rep.

i purchased a new dell outlet desktop (not refurb or s&d). it is enroute, but i just saw this coupon code. the girl i spoke to told me she could not apply it (and did not give me a strong reason). are there any ways to get them to apply this code to the order?

They will not be able to retroactively apply it. You have two options:

1. If you see the same (or better) configuration on the Outlet now - and it comes out cheaper after the coupon than the one you had bought - grab it. Then refuse the delivery of the original purchase.
2. Accept the delivery of the one enroute and call them to return it. They will *likely* offer you a discount. Depending on the price, I would not expect anything more than $50-$100 or about 10% at best. YMMV of course.

tell them you are going to refuse shipping on the one enroute if you don't get it applied and then reorder a new one. Remind them It's costly to them and a pain for you, so propose that you both figure out a better solution.
