Clean Water Services, the public utility in Washington County, says workers pull 1,000 gallons of wipes out of pump stations each month. Every other day, they must shut down a pump station just to clear wipe clogs.

Unlike toilet paper, wipes do not disintegrate in water - including wipes that are labeled as flushable. They stay pretty much intact as they travel through the sewer pipes and can get caught on roots or other debris, increasing the likelihood of a clog.

I love SD! It's just not reasonable to expect parents who have little ones still using baby wipes to be able to remember what a good price per wipe is! Nowadays, half the time, I can't even remember my own name.

Thanks! That's good to know. The way the wipes look, I did think they disintegrate "eventually". Looks like that's not the case.

Over the last few years the Portland Water District has experienced an increase in wastewater pump station malfunctions. Crews regularly need to unclog mounds of disposable wipes from pumps, at considerable expense and environmental consequence. Attempts to address the problem with retrofits and operational changes have not been successful. Now the Portland Water District will try installing grates and is considering construction of a $4.5 million screening facility.

“Disposable wipes, even flushable wipes, should not go down the drain,” exclaimed Tom Hume, senior wastewater systems operator for the Portland Water District. “Most often they end up clogging pumping stations. If they do make it to the wastewater plant, they could cause more damage and ultimately have to be removed at a greater expense.” The Portland Water District warns that the only material that should be flushed is toilet paper.

I don't see an 840 count. Is this dead? If not, can you walk me through, please? Thanks.
