Though I don't necessarily disagree with the advice on buying a previous generation, I would with 16gb vs 32gb. If her 12 year old is anything like my 10 year old, she'll hit 16gb in under a year between music and apps. It adds up quick.
It depends on the kid and the device. I have 20gb of apps on my iPad, no music at all. 40gb of songs on the iPod Touch, no apps at all. Her girl wants to text using iMessage I think. Not much into music yet. But apps use wayyyy more space than I thought. I am glad I have the 32gb iPad, can't imagine being hamstrung with only 16gb.
I also think 300 plus for a 12 year old's gift is a LOT lol, especially when kids lose and break these things. But I don't advise just out of my own pocket either.

Although it is a Oct 2012 refresh. The 5th gen isn't even released yet lol.
I was advising a friend on buying iPods for Christmas and I told her to forget about spending 300 bucks on an iPod for a 12 year old. If she wants pink, get her a pretty case. The 16gb at $179 makes more sense and the 5th gen price point is very high - not everyone has a use for 32gb.
Yes, the point is that the OP had to correct his/her title. It was misleading. It originally said "new generation". Whether you want to buy the newest or 4th gen is your own personal choice of course. I only stated that this wasn't actually the 5th gen because of the original post title which has since been corrected.
