Never got into Diablo, but to say SC2 is a decline from SC1 is to go a little overboard on the nostalgia trip.
Hopefully you are just a more discerning person than you were in 97/98.

Sc2 is a blast. Diablo 3 was fun while it lasted but nothing to keep people playing. Last time I checked WoW still had 10 million subs still. They aren't going anywhere though I hope they learn from diablo 3 they will have to do a lot better with game releases to come

I think the decline he's talking about is blizzard's sole focus on World of Warcrack for the last decade, leaving other worthy exploits like SC and Diablo on the backburner for far too long. Can you blame them? The, umm... hordes of WoW addicts out there have been keeping their gold chests quite full these last ten years. Why would they do otherwise?

The problem is, those of us who actually really remembered and enjoyed Starcraft and Broodwar were sorely disappointed. Yes, in my opinion were of noticeably higher quality than SC2. And yes, I play SC2. Look at it this way - it took them 10 years. 14 freakin years to make a that's essentially the same exact dimension of thinking as the original, but without as much depth or originality. The depth of SC/BW's (and even of the original Warcraft series, if you can remember that far back) story arcs were truly masterful, making them instant classics. They were also cutting edge in real time strategy at the time, pioneering success in the genre that many other games failed to realize.

SC2 does look prettier, especially in cut scenes. But by much? Certainly not 14 years worth. Cut scenes and shading gimmicks aside, the game essentially plays the same way, but with simple tinkerings that changed the dynamics here and there. Considering how long it took them to continually make balance adjustments, many would say the changes were for the worse here. In fact, SC2 is still getting tweaked quite frequently because of poor balance design.

I think you might judge too harshly when someone says "it's a decline". No one is saying that SC2 is a necessarily bad game. It certainly does the trick. The problem is, many of us had faaar higher expectations, and far earlier than this and it just came up way short on either point. I suspect that those who scoff at gamers saying it's a decline of blizzard are generally younger and may not remember what we're talking about here. But that's just a suspicion.
