I just bought one from the apple store on Wednesday, so I called them to see if they would price adjust. I went in today and apple credited my card back $218.

I bought this MBP two weeks ago from Fry's. It is the newest model without double. The total price for me is $999 + shipping fees(around $10) + NO tax for MN. Compared to the most popular price, which is $1139, it is a great deal.

I like the screen and build quality of the Macbook, but for the specs (and the lousy OS), I don't think I'll ever purchase one in my lifetime. Just my 2 cents (not that anyone asked for it).

Once you've mastered it, you'll discover OS X is actually pretty outstanding. I work heavily in media production, and it just handles whatever I throw at it with aplomb. The stability is just ridiculous. In 3 years of using Mac, I have not once had a problem that even required me to restart it (aside from updates, obviously). Anyway, I'd say give it some more time. I've found that most people who don't like Macs just haven't used them for long enough to appreciate their benefits. And the people who stick with them never want to switch back to Windows, myself included.

I've used linux for several years, and even Unix. Mac OS is too restrictive for me, and the proprietary software that is popular on it is not relevant to me. I like the idea of a lightweight laptop that is not made of cheap plastic and 50 screws, and that looks good, but I can't get behind the price. It's like the new ultrabooks...there's no reason for them to have the premium that they do. I'm willing to pay more, but a computer with these specs can be had for half the price, and there's my problem.

Out of curiosity, what is restrictive about it? Is there anything that cannot be achieved in Terminal, if necessary? I'm not a heavy Linux user; I've only dabbled in it in the past.

It's a proprietary Operating System. By it's nature (the fact that you really have to work to put it on non-apple devices is an obvious example) it's going to be restrictive. The source is not open, you can only legally install it on certain computers. Going further, there's just certain things you can't achieve or modify that you could in linux. The thing with linux is that you can legally change anything you want, and it's open-source and just waiting for you to do so. The average user might not care (in fact, Windows is by far the most restrictive OS and it is the most popular) but for me, while it's not overly a big problem in usability, it's a matter of principle. Anyways, like I've said, I like the build quality of them, but since I wouldn't have any plans to use their OS, I can't see a reason to drop that much cash on a notebook with these specifications. Now, if they offered a blank hard drive version without their fancy logo, and offered it for 700 bucks, I'd be on it in a heartbeat.

But yes, if you are in the market for a Mac, this is a good deal. I did not TD this for that reason alone.
