Best Buy Fights 'Showrooming' With Amazon Price Match
Best Buy (BBY) is matching Amazon.com (AMZN) prices on consumer electronics this holiday season, in another sign that brick-and-mortar retailers are aggressively fighting back against the "showrooming" trend.
Best Buy said Friday it has authorized its local stores to match online prices of competitors for appliances and consumer electronics. The lower prices will be matched at the discretion of Best Buy staffers on the sales floor, said company spokeswoman Amy von Walter. The offer is valid now through Nov. 17 and Nov. 27 to Dec. 24, skipping a 10-day period around Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
The online price matching does not include some items, such as smartphones, software and entertainment content like CDs and DVDs.
In addition to online price matching, Best Buy will offer free shipping to customers seeking items that are out of stock in the store.
Best Buy also will be promoting same-day, in-store pick-up of items purchased online at BestBuy.com, von Walter says.
Best Buy's online price-matching promotion is targeted at 20 Internet retailers, including Amazon and Buy.com and the online divisions of Wal-Mart (WMT), Target (TGT), HHGregg (HGG) and Sears (SHLD).
Best Buy, Wal-Mart and other brick-and-mortar retailers are fighting a trend called "showrooming," where consumers look at products in physical stores but order them online at cheaper prices. In effect, Amazon and other e-tailers are using their rivals' physical stores as their showrooms.
"We're turning the tables on showrooming," von Walter told IBD.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Best Buy plans to match the price of internet retailers like Amazon over the holidays this year, as well as offering free home delivery when stores are out of stock.
That or it will be full-on hunting season for SD'ers at Best Buy.
I imagine BBY is going to set a policy in place, where they will ONLY match: amazon and very specific websites. But if they do not, can you imagine the bedlam when getting them to price match?
I don't want to imagine it I actually have a BBY with management who gives a moderate damn about customers, but most BBY's I've dealt with treat anybody trying to PM like lying con artists and thieves out to rob them of their modest *cough* profits.
I have some small hope it's going to be a good thing. They did offer giftcards for all the dumbass video game deals they screwed up last year, which was a new trick. Normally BBY screws up and tells you its somehow your fault. Maybe they are trying to get themselves together.
They need to start matching their own shelf tags first. Never seen a place with such inaccurate pricing, and when you say something to the neck-tatted dropouts behind the counter, you are met with icy stares. BBY won't be around much longer IMO.
