So i've got a Microsoft Windows Xp, Media Center Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3. I just have a quick question in terms of configuring what programs are activated upon start-up. I notice on the bottom right of my screen are a bunch of little icons of programs that i don't use anymore. I've googled this but only gotten methods of speeding up my start-up as opposed to whats being started up.
1. How to edit programs that start-up on.. start-up.
2. Is there any way to reset or get my computer to close enough to "factory settings" w/o the disk?
http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/ may also be of some use. If you really don't wont the programs anymore, you should uninstall them. Also, in many cases in the programs settings you'll find an option controlling whether it loads on startup, this is usually the best option to make sure the setting sticks.
Use a program like CCleaner[piriform.com] to check your Startup items. It will give you an easy to view window of what all is starting up and will allow you to disable it from starting or you can delete it altogether from starting up.
Startup Control Panel[mlin.net] is a simple and effective program for controlling what runs at startup. CCleaner is also a very useful tool and has the same functionality. All the other suggestions so far are good too.
