SCORE! Target has the Canon SX40 on clearance and found one close to me. Ended up with the demo camera (looks perfect and with all accessories and warranty) on closeout for $214. I asked for a further discount and got a additional 20% off! Sweet!
Check your local Target stores people as their inventory is not accurate and you may get lucky. So full price new in box is $214. or out of box take an additional 20% off. A SD for sure!
Picture quality of T3i will be much better. However, duplicating a zoom of this focal length on a DSLR would be costly.
Regarding never having owned a DSLR before, a T3i can also operate in "auto" like the SX40 and the SX40 can operate in manual mode (you control aperture, shutter speed, ISO and WB) the way a DSLR should be operated. (The SX40 does not shoot RAW, but I think that there is a hack that makes that possible.)
Dang it... there are no Frys around here in upstate South Carolina. I want to get this camera because of the great reviews on how good the video is out of it. This camera ought to make a really nice addition for our church to double up on picture-taking and any videos that we might want to take to show the congregation.
I've tried all of the Targets in the area, but nobody has one.
Went to Best Buy 3 Weeks back , saw the camera, asked if they would price match frys for $269. The guy said sure. I told him it wasn't online and he'd have to call for the price. He matched it and didn't even bother calling. I have two young boys, so I also thought it to be wise and invested in their accidental breakage coverage for an additional $79. Its an awesome camera for anyone looking for a easy to use alternative to an slr. One thing everybody will be sure to love is the battery life. I've charged it one time in 3 Weeks and have taken over a 1,000 pics and a half hour plus of video turning the camera on and off probably a hundred plus times and the battery meter still shows full.
As mentioned above, this camera can still be found in some Targets for $217 on clearance. I scored two on Friday and my friend picked up one yesterday. Here is inventory checker (change zipcode in URL for your area):
And I have had this camera for a year now and really love it. It has a few drawbacks, like autofocus can be slow or just not agreeable, but it was well worth the $400 I paid for it so definitely worth $269 or lower.
I scored one Sunday. 214. There was still a display model there. I thought about grabbing it, but decided to allow a lucky soul.
Remember to ask for an additional discount if you find a display model at Target. Most every manager will automatically give an additional 10% off, some 20% off. There are still several stores out there with display models.
