Ya, they sold the cable as a part of the redesign to make the iPhone5 thinner, when they actually just want to control the market for their cables and accessories, which are overpriced like crazy.

There is absolutely no reason they had to make it a DAC cable either, other than they wanted to have MORE control over how people use their purchased products. Now Apple can begin blacklisting products that aren't "licensed". Nothing you can do when your cable won't even let a device communicate with the phone.
