"All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident."
- Arthur Schopenhauer “It is natural for man to indulge in the illusions of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth… For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst, and to provide for it.” - Patrick Henry END THE FED |

There was a naval battle in the gulf of tonkin. There's no doubt about that. There was a second incident that makes it more "conspiracy oriented" but that first incident -- mixed with the atmosphere of the cold war -- was really all it took. You could say that not telling the truth about the state of soldiers in vietnam is a conspiracy, but then basically all wars are conspiracies. Countless cultures glorify war, while war is ultimately terrifying and destructive. Same thing with Iraq. I think only a select few people really know if it's a true conspiracy or not. In my mind, it's a legit conspiracy if that operation were launched SOLELY for profits. I still believe that many people in that administration (rightly) believed Hussein was a terrible person and they (probably not rightly) felt it was their role to do something about it. And then some profiteers took advantage of a business situation, in large-scale way of how people sometimes "take advantage" of a divorce to get a really good deal on a house. So not sure if it's a conspiracy or just a bad decision. I'm no student of history, but did the CIA ever enact Northwoods? Or was it just a crazy scheme, like many that have been and will be cooked up by people who are literally paid to think up crazy schemes. And finally, Paperclip isn't anything more than a product of defense and fear. It'd be a conspiracy if we found out that the scientists were recruited in order to build a robo-Hitler a la Doom. IMHO of course. Last edited by bonkman; 10-20-2012 at 05:24 PM.. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

It is well enough that the people of this nation do not understand our banking and monetary system, for if they did, I believe there would be a revolution before tomorrow morning. -Henry Ford |

And isn't glorifying war the same thing as not telling the truth about it? |

Science is much more than a body of knowledge. It is a way of thinking. This is central to its success. Science invites us to let the facts in, even when they don’t conform to our preconceptions.
