Option for Wifi Cell Phone without getting Verizon Data Plan

MonteCristo 884 October 16, 2012 at 12:15 PM
I am coming up to renewal of my Verizon 2 years term and am eligible for new phone, etc. I do not want to sign up for data plan, however would want a cheap wifi phone. Of course Verizon will not upgrade me to any new wifi phone without the data plan, so how can I get a 'cheap' phone and keep my # and use it for wifi Verizon plan without having to upgrade my plan?

Verizon hasn't let you have a smartphone without a data plan for years. I think the last one they'd let you do it with was the XV6900.

don't believe you can upgrade to any "cheap" phone that'll offer a full HTML browser without verizon slapping on some data plan on it.

Can't be done to my knowlege, especially with a renewal of a contract. I would pickup a ipod touch, or an android device (Nexus 7) to use around wifi.

The site he got the hack from is the best, I used it to hack my Sebring to run on diesel, and now I get 50MPG.

That's nothing! I found a post that showed me how to give my Prius 750 RWHP.

Unlike Mr. "Oh I just downloaded a hack to add wifi to my phone", what OP in this thread is asking is technically possible to do, it's just not technically legal, per say....

...but it's done everyday and many SDers know of the process. I just really can't advise anyone do it without some knowledge of how CDMA works at least. Big Grin

I am not saying it can't be done. In the past some carriers including Verizon will not activate a device on their network that they know needs a data plan (MEID tells what it is). When a phone is off contract I would assume this would be much easier. Obviously on a contract the carrier is counting on the price of the data package to make up the subsidized cost of the phone.

I just want to keep their voice plan, but no data plan to use their 3G network to browse. Instead, use WIFI to check emails and can use google voice/txt using wifi. Again, not having to pay for their txt messaging and data services.

Buy an Ipod touch.

even the feature phones (not a dumb phone not a smart phone in between) require data plan.

verizon use MEID to activate phones
MEID will tell them what device you are using, and they will not allow you to activate that phone without a data plan.

Like others said, your best bet is to stick with a simple phone for phone calls, and just carry an ipod touch for browsing.

or if you want android, get the samsung android player.
