Frequently Asked Questions:

Can I upgrade from a Windows operating system older than Windows XP?
If you want to upgrade from an earlier Windows operating system than Windows XP (for example, Windows 95 or Windows 2000), you'll need to purchase the Windows 8 System Builder. You won’t be able to keep any files, settings, or software programs when you install the new operating system.

Can I upgrade from a 32-bit version of Windows to a 64-bit version of Windows 8?
If your PC has a 64 bit-capable processor (CPU) but is currently running a 32-bit version of Windows, you can install a 64-bit version of Windows 8. You also won't be able to keep any files, settings, or software programs when you upgrade from a 32-bit to a 64-bit version.

If I upgrade and select "keep nothing," how can I restore my files after the upgrade?
If you're running Windows Developer Preview or Windows 8 Consumer Preview when you upgrade, or if you choose the option to "keep nothing" when you upgrade, your files won't come with you to Windows 8. However, you might still be able to copy your files over after you upgrade. If you don't reformat your hard drive during installation, your files are saved to the Windows.old folder, where you can retrieve them after the upgrade.

If I change my mind, can I uninstall Windows 8 and go back to a previous version of Windows?
Not exactly - To go back to your previous version of Windows, you'll need to format your hard drive and then reinstall the previous version of Windows from the recovery or installation media that came with your PC. Typically, this is on a DVD. If you don’t have recovery media, you might be able to create it from a recovery partition on your PC using software provided by your PC manufacturer. Check the support section of your PC manufacturer’s website for more info. After you install Windows 8, you won’t be able to use the recovery partition on your PC to go back to your previous version of Windows.

How can I tell if my devices (keyboards, mice, webcams) will work with Windows 8?
Windows 8 generally works with the same peripheral devices and apps that work with Windows 7. In some cases, a device or program might require an update. The best way to tell if your devices will work before you upgrade is to run Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant, a free program that scans your current hardware, software programs, and devices for compatibility.

Can I upgrade my PC currently running Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 95, or Windows 2000 to Windows 8 using the Windows 8 Pro Pack product?
No. You’ll need to purchase the Windows 8 Pro (Professional) product. The Windows 8 Pro-Pack product let’s you upgrade only if you have a device already running Windows 8 ("Core") operating system.

Update! Windows 8 Features:

Lot of misconception and many misleading information from people in this thread (Both positive and negative). I recommend you to spend some time and get information you like to know about Windows 8 from valid sources.

Building Windows 8 Blog (MSDN) is a very good and valid source to get your information about Windows 8 and new features that are coming with Windows 8: Link [msdn.com]

Price is now $68.88 - $30 promo credit (which better matches Micro Center).
Promo has been extended to 10/27.

There are two editions of Windows 8 for consumer PCs:
  • Windows 8 (core)
  • Windows 8 Pro
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_8_editions

There are at least four upgrade options to Windows 8 Pro:
  1. The Windows 8 Pro Pack here upgrades Windows 8 (core).
  2. The Windows 8 Pro here upgrades Windows XP/Vista/7.
  3. The $39.99 digital download option, starting 10/26/2012 until 1/31/2013 directly through Microsoft, upgrades Windows XP/Vista/7.
  4. The Windows Upgrade Offer for $14.99, starting 10/26 directly through Microsoft, if you bought a qualified Windows 7 PC between 6/2/2012 and 1/31/2013.
Between options 2 and 3, the Windows 8 Pro here comes with physical DVD(s).

Amazon credit is almost good as cash, so you save $20. I'll rep ya, better price than other retailers so far.

I'm not entirely clear: is this the upgrade version or a full copy?

The Pro version is the upgrade from Win7, Vista, or XP. The Pro Pack is to upgrade from Win8 "Core" edition to Win8 "Pro" edition.

Win8 Pro Description: "Upgrade your Windows 7, XP, or Vista PC with Windows 8 Pro"

Win8 Pro Pack Description: "Upgrade your Windows 8 device to Windows 8 Pro with Pro Pack"

What am I missing here, I thought Microsoft was providing an upgrade for $40 on release? Isn't this the same thing but more minus you essentially buying yourself a giftcard making up the difference?

Anyone know if you can do an "in-place" Windows 8 upgrade? In other words, with Windows 7 Upgrade, I can do a fresh install by installing Windows 7 on top of each other (ie, install it twice), then activate on the 2nd install. Anyone know if this can be done with Windows 8?

hmm according to nbc and yahoo its only 40 dollars, no need to go through the whole credit thing on amazon.....

http://www.nbcnews.com/technology...sta-858859

direct quote from the above source.....
"There doesn't appear to be any fine print: you just go to Windows.com, pay your $40, and it will immediately walk you through the installation. If you want a disc, you can burn your own or pay an extra $30 for a hard copy at the brick-and-mortar store. The offer goes until January 31st, 2013, so you've got some time to think about it."

So they are not actually calling it upgrade version?
I assume that means it can install on brand new machine and also upgrade.

I have to wait for 30 day after I receive the product? I wish they can just do 39.99

2. 30 days after your item is shipped, you will receive an email with a promotional code worth $30 on Amazon.com. The next time you are shopping on Amazon.com, paste the promotional code in the Promotional Code box at checkout, and the discount will be applied at the Order Summary screen during purchase.
