I even built a dual core system because of it and was forced to return it. Quad core solved all issues with stutter and lag.

It depends on the game or application. The Anandtech review does state that the A8 quad core would perform better in multi-threaded applications (games included) and that the i3 is better at single-threaded applications. For current games, most of which are multi-threaded, slower quad core definitely wins.
