The 10% discount is surely only through Marriott's reservation system, but I have attached my Marriott Rewards number to a Hotwire or Priceline reservation 3 or 4 times and I always get the points credited. So the 20% boost should work at least.

I don't think you can transfer online easily- you have to call and they typically allow transfers only for reward redemptions. I may be wrong but that was my understanding:

I would not want to have to speak to a rep and lie if your company is not in the list and you used just some link to get status.

Log on to your account on their website. Your status is right below your name after you log on.

Anyhow, I thought you automatically get the Silver simply by signing up for the rewards account. No?

You're lying if you sign up under a link for a company who doesnt employ you.

Regarding Free Internet Access, do you have to have a room at the hotel to use free internet, or would you be able to log onto their system with your Silver status credentials and access the internet. I was assuming that you get a specific code associated with your booked room.

Most hotels give you a complimentary code when checking in.. if you have achieved a certain status. That code is usually written on business card and good until the hotel decides to change it.. my educated guess would be this happens every 30days or so. Other hotels.. require you to login to the computer and still "purchase" the internet service to use it, the hotel then just bills you at a rate of $0.00 per day due to your higher status. Lastly some hotels just require you input your last name & room number to access the internet.. and with your higher status theres simply nothing to purchase/bill at any rate.

Either way, they make it pretty hard for you to use their internet service.. if you are NOT staying at their hotel. I dont think you can just sit in the lobby of a Marriott and use their internet service for free, without having a reservation.

Yes it DOES work for existing members. I signed in and sent a message to Marriott Rewards telling them what company I worked for and I received the following response:

Looking at YoSlick's experience I wouldn't recommend contacting Marriott to upgrade your account.According to the T&C of this offer, you would get Silver Status for 1 year!!
After upgrading his account they are giving him Silver status till Feb 2013. Ummm... That's only 3 months away! What's the use?


Just use THIS NEW account as your account. Trust me, NOBODY is going to find out or ask you why you have 2 accounts. Same for anybody else who wants to apply but doesn't work for that company. Choose a BIG company like Dell or Chase, and no one is EVER going to ask you to show proof.

I've had this. Pretty much useless. It took me years to get enough points for even one free night. (And I traveled a lot.) They don't upgrade you, they don't give you anything special. Waste of time.

Sadly silver membership level doesnt really offer any great perks. The great perks don't usually come until gold or platinum levels. I have been silver for years until I decided to switch hotel chains. I now tend to stay at Kimpton brands where they are available, far better than Marriott.

I think ANY hotel membership is useless if you're not staying there a lot. But a lot of us have points because we got them with credit card signups. I don't stay at hotels at all...so it would be next to impossible for me to accumulate points. But because of the Chase Marriott credit card, I now have 240k points in my account.

I think that it's better to be Silver than no status at all. Having said that, I agree that as a silver member, the perks are really low.

Interesting....

Lately, I have been enrolled in the megabonus promotion, and I get a free night after 2 stays.

So far, I have used about 20 free nights (get about 2-3 every quarter).

Silver isnt really great... Upgrades if available. Gold is where the benefits really kick in (Lounge access)
