Hello Peeps -

About every 3 or 4 months I drop in over here to ask for your expert advice on some gaming question. You guys have always been great and I appreciate your patience when I ask stupid newbie mom questions!

DS, who is 8, has become a huge Minecraft fan. In March, I bought him the Xbox 360 with 4GB of memory when he got straight A's. He has Xbox live and I have clearly gotten my money's worth out of this system.

Last night when he turned the game on, there was a HUGE update/download for Minecraft. The normal updates/downloads take a minute or two but this one took 10-15 minutes. (You guys probably know all of this). So when he was done playing in his "world" he went to "save" and it said he couldn't save because he was out of space. He was not happy as all of his "work" would be lost. (Too bad he doesn't work this hard at cleaning his room!! lol) Anyway, I have been reading around and found out that it is possible for his hard drive to be full. I found some YouTube video showing how to install an additional hard drive in the side panel. (This ought to be interesting to watch me do this!!)

My question (finally) is what do I buy? Is there a special hard drive for Xbox or will any HD work? What size do I get? Where do I get it? (I know not to say Best Buy as I just about got killed in here the last time I said those words!! laugh out loud Any idea of approximate cost range?

Again, thanks in advance for your help, advice and patience!!

Yes if you want to buy a Hard drive for the Xbox you will need a special hard drive for Xbox they are not cheap $90.00 for a 250GB official one at Amazon. link [amazon.com]

But you can use a Flash drive to hold game-saves you can use up to a 16GB flash drive just keep in mind that the Xbox needs 1GB of it for the Xbox info and format to be added to it. Flash drive info link [xbox.com] You can use just about any Flash drive you don't need the official Xbox one. But if you want one the 8GB one is $20 at Gamestop.

Hope this helps if you have any more questions just ask.

easiest thing to do is to buy a xbox 360 Hard drive
you said you got him the 4gb xbox, so it should be one of the new slim black models

get him a HDD like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-25...mentWidget

thats the official MS hard drive (smallest one available) and it'll solve your problem

if you want to save a little $$, you can buy these hacked versions (they clone the MS data and put it on generic Hard Drives)
http://www.amazon.com/320GB-Inter...hard+drive
everything points to these working just fine as well, but its not official so you run the risk of possibly damage the console or even ban of xbox live service (dont' know anyone actually who's ever been banned for cloned HDD data).

Youtube video to show you how to install the HDD, you literally just slide it in

So if I buy one online and it takes a few days to get here, he can use a flash drive in the interium? I just went searching and I have one that is 8GB (all my other ones are much smaller). Is that correct? Then can he transfer the fash drive info to the new hard drive?

Is it worth the extra $25 to get a genuine Xbox HD versus a generic one like this [amazon.com]. I have no clue.

Is his work already lost or are you keeping the xbox on until you have a solution? To save his work in the meantime, you can format a USB flash drive to be read by the xbox and allow him to save his work to that until you get a bigger hard drive. If the USB drive is of substantial size (e.g. 8GB or larger) you probably could just leave it plugged in and use that as a secondary hard drive.

pretty sure its easier just to get the HDD and not worry about filling up a flash drive in the future
i don't know how mindcraft on the 360 goes, but doesn't those files get big like on the PC?
Then all the DLC maps? Or does that not happen on 360

Either way, guess you could do the flash drive route, i'd just stick with the HDD and be done with it.

Yep what ever he saves to the flash drive you can move it to the Hard drive when you get it. Here is how link [xbox.com] What ever you have on the Flash drive will be deleted when you 1st format it for the Xbox so make sure you copy all you files off of it.

And that's really up to you I know people who buy the knockoffs none has been banned yet to my knowledge for using one and most likely will not at this point but be aware they don't do backwards compatibility with original Xbox games but at this point almost no one plays Xbox 1 games anyways.

Iagree

Just look for a SD on a 8-16 GB flash drive... I still use my original 20GB HD and still have plenty of room for things.

With a new XBox potentially coming out in a year I wouldn't spend any extra $ on it if you can get away with it.

She just got the 360 in March, I don't get the impression they plan to upgrade in the immediate future.

I would agree with those suggesting the USB Drive.

If he has been getting by on a 4GB console...a 16 GB stick will be MORE than enough. If he is paying for LIVE, he can also use the cloud storage. That is only 0.5 GBs though, and only for gamesaves. Usually gamesaves are very small, but Minecraft might be different since it has to store your "world".

I'd use the 8GB stick for now, and get him a 16GB stick for his next special event/stocking stuffer.

Also, [most likely] the Update was not a Minecraft update, but the XBOX Dashboard update (surprised no one mentioned that). The whole Dashboard (startscreen) was updated, that is why it took longer and took up so much space.

He might have got the Dash update too but yesterday was the Minecraft 1.8.2 update it added Creative Mode, Sprinting, Flying and sprint-flying to Creative Mode, new Mobs and Hunger plus tons more.

Ahhhh! Sprinting? You are a character? I thought it was just a hovering screen, like design mode in Halo. I know nothing of Minecraft.

I agree with IPT, rather than quick fixing the issue with the use of a USB stick that will eventually fill up and need yet another quick fix USB stick, just buy the hard-drive to put in place a permanent solution. shake head
