I know this is a week + old but how was this not a good price? It's not only the lowest straight up price that SD's shows but it's even LOWER than the pre-flood prices of a year ago ++ that's better than getting back to where we were that's progress down from there. It's a good drop from the high $80's low $90's that it's been for hitting for sale prices recently as well. It was only $10 - $20 more than the 500 & 320GB sizes. I picked up a 320GB trying to save some cash but utimately for $15 bucks more I got the 750GB & will be returning the 320GB.

Going back a year and a half the only time it hit this price was here:

and that was for a refurbished drive.

This drive speed wise is really only edged out by the Seagate Momentus XT 750 & then only in certain situations. On the whole it's quite a good price / GB and has the best warranty going 5 years. This is good all around. Yes, maybe if not for the price inflation this would be $60-69 for a sale price but I'll take it. I have Desktop drives that don't perform this fast.

What I meant was in relation to current time and average selling price of the drive. A simple eBay search will show you that this drive can be purchased from multiple sellers for only a few dollars more than the sale price here. Check out Amazon again, the price is $85. Granted, that was the lowest price for this drive on Amazon in the history of it being available on there, it was a very slow gradual decline and was the reason for me saying it's not a great price. Not to mention comparable drives from different brands could be purchased for the same price.

I don't think it's fair to use time as a factor, especially for hard drives given their rapid price drops. But your comparing the price of a drive being lower now than it was last year. The drive is still the same, the price is obviously going to drop from then til now.

I'm hoping for some 3.5" drive to drop prices. I used to think 2.5" is great (and they are for notebooks), but i just get paranoid when you get 1TB of data on a device that you run around all day with, that is just not safe.

From bottom to top. Actually the drive is faster now then it was then, but also has to be considered & factor here because of what happened. Especially given the price gouging that went on for that entire last year. So my point was that although had the flooding not happened & the HD makers not created & exploited / hyped the situation like oil speculators creating a frenzy and driving the price up & artificially holding it there for nearly a full year prices would surely have been lower for this drive. That said this marks the first quarter that many of these drives have not only returned to pre-flooding prices but are actually lower. It's a good sign for things to come not only during the holiday season but as an overall general trend. The time/price drop factor isn't obvious or a given with any item (just look what happened prices of hard drives in some cases doubled practically over night). You can't disregard a years worth of price increases as it explains why now $79.99 is a very good price not for what they should be or what they would be had the entire last year not taken place but because they did happen & things are just now returning to a pre-flooding state. It's sim. to the DDR2 price inflation. That shocked a lot of people because not only did the prices go up & up & up they remained high for a long time.

Ebay is only valid if we are talking about an authorized re-seller otherwise the warranty isn't going to be valid. Otherwise you have to go by the manufacture date and those can be a lot sooner than the full 5 years. I looked on Ebay, not too many sellers that are "authorized" by WD.

Comparible drives, that's also a subjective thing. For example what is a comparible drive for laptops? There are only 3 makers now. WD, Seagate, & Toshiba, the rest got swollowed up. So comparing WD's fastest drive to Seagates fastest drive is not a staight shot. The WD's are out performing the Momentus drives, it's only the 750 Momentus XT that competes and slightly beats the WD (although again not a 5 year warranty on that drive). BUT it costs $40 more best sale price WD Scorpio Blk $79.99 from a Authorized reseller compared to Seagate Momentus XT 750 $118.99 Amazon. The other comparible is the Seagate Momentus 750 no XT for ~$79.## but that only has a two year warranty.

I think the gigantic price drops in multple sessions (FOR SSDrives) have put a lot of pressure on the HDD cabal to end their gouging and to me the WD Scorpio @ $79.99 was the clear winner, even @ $84.59 it still is.
